Not that straightforward. There is theoretically nothing stopping us from using a gun. But the important part is that it is illegal to possess any kind of weapon "for purposes contrary to the interests of public safety". And the courts have ruled that self defense is such a purpose.
So if you're accosted in the street and beat the guy off with a bar of soap in a sock, and the police ask you why you were carrying a bar of soap in a sock while walking down the street, you'd be arrested if you said it was in case you needed to hit someone with it. You could still (probably) claim self defense on the actual act of the beating and not get convicted of assault, but you would face charges for carrying the weapon itself, and it would work against you on the assault charge if they convinced the jury you went out planning on hitting someone. Conversely, it isn't necessarily illegal to use a gun in self defense if that's not why you had it in the first place.
This is why pepper spray and Tasers are prohibited; there's not reason to own them that doesn't involve self defense, while guns aren't completely banned because they have other uses.
Though keep in mind there have been a few other ways the RCMP has tried to put people in jail for using guns. There was at least one instance of a man who used a gun to fend off an attack on his home and being charged with improper storage and handling, since he kept the gun and ammunition out instead of in their respective safes while he waited for the police to arrive, assuming they would want to examine it as evidence. Eventually the charges were dropped, but not after a long and bullshit legal process.

My question is, though, why doesn't anyone else here seem to be carrying? Even if you're at home, you shouldn't have to go fetch your weapon. Bad guys don't wait, and it's not such a hassle that you can't do it. Well, I'm one of those darkies, but maybe you just mean terrorist fucks, in which case, go ahead. I hope your life goes better so you can do something productive instead of thinking dumb things. But if you think you have it in you, you could always join the military. It might straighten you out. I know that I felt a lot less depressed after I got through. If you don't want to "fight for Israel" as is the common complaint around here, you might join the guard. They get deployed, but mostly they help locally in disasters and such. It might do you good to do a bit of service that actually helps your community, and of course there is 18 series in the guard as well, so that might help you get hired by PMCs, but don't attempt unless you're fit.
For now, just work on yourself and go back to school if you can. Don't let life pass you by. I did that for a long time because of a fucking woman, which is an even worse way to spend your time than anime and video games. I don't know your circumstances, but I hope they get better. Regarding the military…
I thought about national guard to avoid the aforementioned kikes but I'm kind of a pussy. Probably a little autistic as well. Honestly I'd feel like a bit of a hypocrite saying trannies shouldn't join the military since they're mentally unfit when I'm hardly the shining example of mental excellence myself. I'm not going full Klinger or and describing myself as otherkin but I'm definitely a bit weird. I don't know if I could properly integrate myself as a round peg in the square hole that is our military.
My biggest fear would be getting a minor injury that I couldn't deal with mentally like a broken nail or a chipped tooth and just throwing in the towel immediately.

Well, my computer desk is 8 feet from my front door. I can pull open my drawer and grab my super Comanche loaded with a round of home defense .410, lean in my chair, and fire. So .5 seconds.
Another 8 feet behind me is my couch, with a glock 20 stuffed between the cushions. There's also a no shit halberd in my umbrella case right next to my door. And if you stand on my steps, there's a small shelf type landing, so that you could be standing on my steps facing the front door, reach up, and grab whatever is there. I currently keep a black powder Colt Dragoon up there. So I'm pretty set.
