I'm just biased, since the whole esports thing is slowly starting to ruin the fighting game scene.
I think sponsorships and prize money is fine, since that helps players actually attend tournaments and promote themselves and their game.
It's when people outside of the actual community start getting involved that it gets kind of bad. Old rich guys just hear "esports is the next big thing" and invest some money to try and make a quick buck. There's no passion involved from them, and it shows.
Might be better in other games and sports, but that's just my limited perspective.
