Here's what happened.
>South and North Vietnam is liberated from the French
>Communist groups start for economic reasons and the USSR and CCCP start sending their students there to give some pointers to help become communist country
>US freaks out because the Soviet Union and China will gain an ally and access to crucial warm water ports and oil in the Pacific Ocean
>US sends soldiers there to police and give some pointers to the South Vietnamese government
>The US kicks the commies shit in but forgot being diplomatic and thus the Vietnamese that were in contact with the US soldiers hated their guts
>US tries to curb civilians trying to join the communists
>Fails
>US tries to break through enemy lines and kills civilians
>US discovers that Commies are using Cambodia and Laos as a means to transport arms and food
>US freaks out and does a massive bombing raid on those countries
>Their governments are helping the communists
>Communist do the Tet Offensive
>Fails
>US goes God of Wrath on the Communist
>US has been at war for ~6 some years and the Vets and college students are putting social pressure on the US government
>US finally admits that Vietnam is never going to be full Vietnam
>Makes the North and South sign a peace agreement
>US leaves in a hurry
>South Vietnam invaded and goes full commie
In the end. It boiled down to two things.
The US was unable to cope with being diplomatic and thus suffered the consequences and communist using Vietnam as a method of wearing down the US.
The US never was at a war. It was a police action that turned into an occupation. After all was said and done. The US did stop the communist from invading South Vietnam while they were there. But, At least the US got the last laugh.
