I'm usually more for reading the manga, assuming the's the starting medium, but some animations do it pretty well and have good scores to them.
Still interesting to see how it the original author did it, especially when if you see them progress in their quality. It also helps if the anime stopped at certain arc but the manga still has some more afterwards.

Always stick with the original, it's just how it goes. A good example is Eva I think. They change up Shinji's character. Basically make him not to look so much like a "bitch" which I think takes away from his uniqueness.
