Just from what I remember:

The main character's parents (maybe) and sister (definitely) is saved during thee movie, absolutely destroying everything that could happen after that. It basically would exist in a different universe.

I still have a very clear image of everything that I imagined in the book, and much younger me was very sad that the movie sets didn't quite match up.

I haven't seen it since it released, so that's all I really remember.

I don't remember them picking through poop in the movie, but that might have been a later book.
