Animation just takes a long time. I've only really done 2d before, but I imagine that 3d is even harder without the use of mocap or anything.
The plus to 3d is that your model will always be consistent, and with how rigging works you can apply animations to similar rigs and tweak it a bit so you don't have to re-do everything for another model.
