0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

Not really a whole lot to tell…
I had a pe2950 and then got a r710 and a r210ii.
The r210ii is sitting to my right without a CPU right now though.
I got lazy and only run pfsense, a torrent VM and Emby and file storage now on the r710.

In the realm of get the best that you possibly can… I'll take the 192kbps version.
The r710 has x5670's and 48GB of RAM. It's just about enough for anything I do… Emby gets questionable with some transcodes, but it usually manages. Otherwise… the server is basically doing nothing at all near capacity.
I've got a small business class Cisco switch for no reason at all as well because I was going to play with VLANs, but never did.
