First off, any quiet room works as a self-brainwashing room if you have decent headphones and a VR headset for https://github.com/ohgodhowdidthis/trance . Unless you move around a bunch or want to brainwash multiple people at once, this gives the best bang for your buck and needs the least setup.

Pic #1 is the normalfag-tier brainwashing room: it's a fucking TV room and everyone has one of those. You'll want extra soundproofing so you don't spook the neighbours or wildlife.

#2 takes us into obsessive richfag territory, far beyond most anons' means. Lining your walls with screens is expensive and power costs are probably sky-high, but nothing screams "I have lots of money and love brainwashing" like this clusterfuck. Projectors would make it much cheaper but don't really light up the room, and if you want to down the "line your walls with displays" route you might as well build a fucking CAVE setup like #3.

If your brainwashing room isn't being used for anything else and doesn't double as a bondage equipment room, keep it uncluttered and make sure it's easy to clean. You don't want your fetish to become a burden, so design your brainwashing room with durable materials and make sure any fabrics or furniture are washable. Your future, brainwashed self will thank you.

As for soundproofing, read https://archive.is/QKyL8 for the handyman approach and https://archive.is/qvMd4 for something aimed at home studio fags. Both articles have useful advice on soundproofing and ventilation, and soundproofing is essential if you're using speakers.

What would my ideal, non-VR brainwashing room look like? Probably a small, soundproofed TV room with soft padding thrown over the floor and a decent surround sound system. No furniture aside from a couple pillows, anything more than that turns it into a general kink room. I still don't know how to light it, probably with something tinted and adjustable along with an ambient backlight for the TV.

Alternatively, I could ditch the TV in place of some fancy light equipment to throb with my brainwashing audio.

If you want to trance with speakers, look into ambisonics. Instead of mapping sounds to speaker channels it encodes a soundfield which is decoded to your specific speaker layout, making your room sound like the space the audio was recorded in. The difference compared to regular surround sound is close to HRTF vs regular stereo.

This PDF has a slanted octahedron layout which also plays back 5.1 content very nicely. There isn't any ambisonic hypnosis content content right now and probably wouldn't benefit standard "hypnotist talks into a mic" files, but it would be fucking amazing for brainwashing files with lots of panning and distance effects.
