After giving up on Hydrus a year ago since I never quite got the hang of itd, I'm back to try it again as the file character limit in Winblows is throwing my plans to organize my shit into the garbage and Hydrus now seems like a good solution. But I need help to figure out if my plan to download and organize my image collection is even doable, so I have some doubts I hope anyone can help me to solve:

1-I want to download from the boorus while keeping ALL the image tags for easy searching. I tried with the Bionus Grabber program which is PERFECT when it comes to downloading and naming the images, but the stupid Windows filename limit cuts the tags as soon as the 255 character limit is reached.

Is there a way to download the images like in Bionus Grabber but keeping ALL tags? Or would I need to tag them manually?

2-As for already downloaded images, I saved a lot of them on specific folders according to topic. Is there a way to tag all the images from each folder with certain tags as soon as they are added to the Hydrus database?

3-Are generated thumbnails saved in a separate file for faster browsing? And is their size customizable?

Hey, for a longer intro of the different ways to import and tag, please check out the help and 'getting started guide' here:

https://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/help/index.html

https://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/help/getting_started_files.html

But the shorter 'let's just do it' answers to your questions are:

1 - Yes, this is absolutely doable. As an example, in the client, try going F9->download->gallery->booru->safebooru, which should open a new page. Click 'tag import options' and then click 'get all tags' and click 'apply'. Then on the download page, where it says 'search tags', type 'skirt' and hit enter. The client will then walk through some safebooru gallery pages for 'skirt', fetching the files and applying the tags as it gets them. Hit the pause buttons to stop it.

2 - Yes, there are a couple of ways to do this. The simple way–and I recommend you just try this on 20-100 files at a time, so you get used to it, is to just import them manually with tags. So, find a small folder of files and drag-and-drop it onto the client window. A new window will appear and spend a bit of time parsing the files in that folder. When it is done, click 'add tags based on filename', and then in the box called 'tags for all', put in some tags. There are several other ways to add tags to the files as they import here, some quite complicated. It is worth playing around with them. Anyway, when you are happy, click 'apply' on that and the files should import with the shown tags.

3 - Two copies of thumbnails are stored–a 'master' at 200x200, and a smaller resized one, at whatever resolution you set under file->options->speed and memory. It is possible (although it is an advanced operation, not recommended until you are more comfortable with everything) to split the database of thumbnails apart from the database of files, so you can store the thumbs on an SSD and the files on a HDD, for instance.

Let me know if you have any trouble or other questions.

Thank you based dev, that solves my doubts, and looks like Hydrus will be a permanent solution for my hoarding pipeline, as opposed to having 500 browser tabs opened on the boorus and never getting anything done!

While playing around with the program, a couple more questions emerged:

1-Is there a way to mass download images of a single tag but from all the boorus on the selection list? kinda like the Bionus Grabber does.

2-Is it possible to add other boorus not on the built-in list? Like xbooru and TBIB, a lot of times these have images not featured in any of the big boorus.

3-Is there a way to copy the image directly from the Hydrus media viewer, without having to open it externally in Honeyview then copy it from there?

4-Can it automatically grab the tags for deviantART/FA/pixiv images from the description?

5-Speaking of Pixiv, is Hydrus capable of downloading the animations (ugoira) properly?

Nevermind, disregard question 2, I have found the setting to add boorus.

1 - Not yet, but I am in the middle of a large downloader overhaul right now, and the new 'searcher' object I am planning to be the new stand-in for 'insert search text, get booru search pages' should be nestable for multiple other searchers, so you'll be able to set up a single input that searches like five different boorus with the same text.

3 - If you want to copy the 'bitmap' for pasting into Photoshop, try right-click->share->copy->image (bitmap). If you want to copy the file so you can paste it in some folder, try the 'file' entry on that same menu. And if you want to upload it to 8ch or some other site with a drop-to-upload box, try dragging from the 'arrow' icon button on the top hover window of the media viewer. (If you want to drag-and-drop to discord, set the BUGFIX option under options->gui.

4 - As I roll out more parsers, we'll be able to fetch more tags. FA (FurAffinity, right?) isn't supported yet, but it will be by the time I am done. There's a new Pixiv parser and I just rolled out a new DA parser (although it broke immediate due to them changing their URL structure, will be fixed in v313), but neither parse the unnamespaced tags like '#commission #corp #dewgong #fuse #fusion #kyogre #lab #lanturn #pokemon #request #special #pokesplice #fusemon #dragonith #dekylan' as these tags are often pretty low quality compared to what the boorus give them. The Pixiv ones in particular are not great.

If you know a bit of html though and are willing to get stuck in, this new downloader stuff I am rolling out is specifically designed to be completely user-editable and -shareable. Parsing these tags is not difficult. The downloader stuff is complicated and not yet complete, but if you'd like to give it a go, please check here when you are ready:

https://hydrusnetwork.github.io/hydrus/help/downloader_intro.html

There are also several other users learning this new system, if you do not have any experience scripting or programming, so if you ask around here when the topic comes up or on the discord, I expect someone can sort you out. If no one else can help you, let me know and I'll see what I can figure out.

5 - Not yet, but there is a plan. Ugoiras are fucking ridiculous nip file format, so I will have to construct a whole new import pipeline front-end to sort them out into apngs or webms or mickey-mouse .zip files or something.

Lots of new boorus here, btw:
