I’m surprised there isn’t a Tips and Tricks thread yet so I guess I’ll make one. Let’s post some helpful things we’ve found about using Hydrus to help new and fellow users!

My tips and tricks:

● Under the search, you can pick system:untagged to find all the images that don't have tags yet

● To open a collection you have to right click the collection, then left click open selections in a new page

● To start a slide show, select the files you want then right click then open selection in new page. From there open one image and it will go into full screen, right click and choose start slide show, then the timer you want to use.

● You can have multiple slideshows going at the same time.

-To download from pixiv you have to log in first (services>manage pixiv account)

-You can add boorus in services>manage boorus. Make a search on an unlisted booru, look at the address, search on listed boorus, compare the syntax, use common sense and try out different search syntaxes until you can download from the unlisted booru.

-You can right click the messages in the bottom right corner to dismiss them

-With the key shortcut ctrl+t you can open a window for a new tab and navigate this window with the arrow keys

-You can cycle through tabs with Ctrl-Tab and close one with ctrl+w like in any Web browser

-You can force idle mode in help>debug>force idle mode

These are things that took me some time to figure out.

If Hydrus is having problems playing larger sized gifs/webm/videos at full speed on your computer, you can speed it up by changing the "media viewer mime handling" under "media" in settings. Set the interpolation algorithms to "nearest neighbor", check "only permit half and double zooms", and set any scaling to "scale to the largest regular zoom that fits". This should speed it up significantly.

Fun fact: you can already bind custom tags to shortcuts, and save them for future use.

Filter > custom filter, then "add" (the bottom left one, not the green one!), and then the green "add" to customize it. My workflow has sped up tenfold thanks to this.
