I think it's much more complicated then you boil it down to. Perhaps you're implying that there's some sort of facade where all males are calculating, or not, when it comes to expecting sex or close intimacy from you,
But men in general are fucked when it comes to emotional expression and friendships. In our friendships, it might take six beers to even approach what you'd call "emotional" and "intimate" interactions. We just don't trust each other past the teen years.
A partner of the opposite sex sometimes helps, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes men are even lonelier, probably a result of settling with an incompatible partner, no matter the cost.
Maybe next time you brush someone off as thirsty, just imagine them as a fish grasping for air. Wanting a partner, no matter the cost.
