My great grandmother used to knit blankets for the whole family. I still have the baby blankets she knitted when I was born. She died when I was ten, so she was not able to pass the art onto me unfortunately.

But a few years back I taught myself to crochet and now that it's getting cold out, I'll be making some new scarfs and hats, maybe a blanket or two. It feels really great to be able to create a useful object from nothing. And it feels even better to gift something you created to someone and see the look on their face when you tell them that you made it.

Crochet, knitting, and even sewing is like meditation. Your mind clears and your hands start to move and create with nary a thought in your head. It's quite zen. I highly recommend trying it. I think I may teach myself how to quilt next and make something useful out of old band shirts and ratty clothes.

If anyone is interested I can recommend a few books and I have patterns as well. Can we post pdf's here? YouTube is the best resource for teaching yourself the stitches as there are countless instructional videos.

Crochet is the cheapest to start with imo. You only need one needle to start and a ball of yarn. Make yourself a new winter hat femanon! Join the long line of women before you who fashioned the clothes people wore before Taiwanese sweatshops were a thing!

Seriously? None of you do any kind of arts or crafting at all? DeviantArt Sonic vore commissions don't count

One of my grandmas did make us some blankets, the zig-zag pattern, with multiple colors. So our mom got us into it for a few months. We made scarves, and got some kit that came with a color grid and we did this hook thing and made a shag rug or two.

Don't have the blankets or scarves anymore though. It was so long ago and we've lost all sorts of stuff from back then. I'm an artist, and wish I could paint if not make films, but have switched to reading in my spare time. Books, work and sleep take up the majority of my life now.

I do a lot of reading as well. Winter is comfy for some blanket making and book worming for sure. Maybe it just takes a certain personality today to do these things. One that is becoming a rare thing… the type who doesn't need instant gratification 24 hrs a day.

I went to art school briefly and do all sorts of other arty stuff too but crafting is sort of satisfying on another level. Maybe because the objects you create have practical everyday use. Yes, that's probably it. It's satisfying to me on a deep level to see people I care about wearing my creations, getting good use out of them, etc.

I wish more women were willing to give it a go. I suppose it's considered a grandma type thing to knit or crochet, but really there's loads of young women doing all sorts of super cute stuff.

My grandma tried teaching me how to knit, so I tried knitting a scarf. I was pretty proud of it, until I showed it to her and she ripped it all out because I had missed a few stitches at the beginning. I never got back into it. My knitting is really tight and stiff.

My grandma got me a knitting ring to try next, but I haven't visited her yet to learn how to use it. It's much more pleasant to have your grandma teach you than the internet, isn't it?

I think I will try crochet. There are a lot of super cute hats I've seen that I could line for extra warmth. I once saw crocheted skimpy bikinis in the caribbean, which gave me the idea that you could make your own lingerie. Anybody tried it?

Crochet is much easier than knitting imo. Try it out. I have a decent collection of easy but cute hats, cowls, scarfs. etc that I could share.

I personally wouldn't want lingerie made out of yarn, but I can guarantee someone out there has done it. haha

I made this cute owl hat for a family member a few years back. Her mom kept washing it and stretching it because she didn't want her to outgrow it. :)
