When it's clear that we have a reason to keep communicating on the basis of perceived common ground, I end up making a new friend. But when it's the same thing with a girl, it's okay see you never again. I'm not socially clueless, I can tell when someone is repulsed by me, and that's not what is happening. Are they expecting me to be the one to ask for contact information even though they initiated it? Is it that smart, pretty girls have impenetrable social circles?

Yeah, this was a surprise to me too when I got to this planet. Just a heads up, fellow human, these naked apes love to socialize even though some actively avoid it. It's in their nature to use each other as sounding board whenever and wherever. Don't worry though, once augmented reality becomes a permanent thing in their lives we'll force them to have heads-up-display status flashing before your eyes to notify you if they are "down to fuck" or simply "staving off existential dread with social distractions".

The thing that throws me off the most is that they act all cute and interested. There is a difference between that and just being friendly.

I don't see the point of keeping in touch when a person is clearly not someone you'd want to communicate with in the future. I don't approach people, they come to me. But if they do and both of us show interest, I'm obviously going to be disappointed if we don't establish a connection, and even moreso because they are the ones who bothered to say hello.

I have never interacted with a guy that had such a huge rift between his actions and his behavior in regards to meeting new people. I really hate dishonesty.

Sadly, women are biological liars. You have to treat them like children and have a strong hold on them. Don't let them have the liberty to lie to you and you won't have a problem.

Your mistake is treating them as an equal, they need to be lead, don't expect an equal amount of exchange. Just demand things, be the leader. Don't expect things to magically happen.
