A orchestral score like in the old movies used in a movie like Fury Road would sound hokey as fuck, and the constant pulse of the actual Fury Road soundtrack serves better with the mixture of constant driving as the major blocking of the action scenes and chaotic action going on amongst each car. Trying to throw music cues for everything going would sound like shit.

Its a movie about people and mutants fighting each other primitive twisted metal style in the post apocalyptic desert. You can only get so 'serious' with stuff like that. The guitar and tribal drumming functionally in the film serves as war drums to amp up the war boys. This is consistent with previous themes of the movies of integrating contemporary culture with pre-civilized war culture. For the service of the score, it actually integrates and syncs with the backing soundscore perfectly. It was a well thought out element, as far as the music goes.

Fury Road clearly has more of a budget the Road Warrior and thus can afford a larger scale set and use of set pieces. For the scale of this movie, it wouldn't be as exciting if there wasn't as much cross fire mixed with the javelins and the cranes and the boarding and the ramming. If it was reduced to just bumping into cars and few other set pieces, it would be boring.

To make this argument, it works better to break down each moment and analyze how each part contributes to the ultimate outcome of each skirmish, in order to separate the significant moments from just the noise. That is really the underlying argument about the current overload of modern action movies vs classic movies. Just saying "more = bad" doesn't cut it, you need to explain way. He even admits that there was plenty of variation in Fury Road, but because Road Warrior did it first, it doesn't count or something. That just comes back to my summarization of "its not the old ones, therefore its bad".

Much of the rest of this part is just personal opinions on whether some action scene is good or not without really any good explanation. I give him that the last fight scene lost some its steam but it was overlong and key character moments between the protagonists and antagonists gave it purpose. I have seen this video post so many times as if its the objectively definitive rebuttal to Fury Road when it is clearly not if you take one second to critically think about what is being said. I watched a few times but can get past the first part because how flawed it is. People need to stop dropping this in place of their own opinions, because its terrible.

Pretty much, you can see how they are doing the same thing Star Wars did by using familiar imagery and scenes (Library ghost, silly headgear like the one worn by Louis, ghosts invading city streets)

The original was a genius blend of horror and comedy, it works so well because the ghosts weren't just silly comedy props, they were legitimately scary and dangerous. Exactly! Ghostbusters (1984) can accurately be called a horror comedy, not just supernatural comedy. Take the ghost in the library for example. I saw Ghostbusters in the cinema when it first came out and when the library ghost scared the Ghostbusters it also scared the hell out of everybody in the audience! Judging by the trailer for the 2016 version the library ghost is just used for a sliming joke like Slimer in the hotel. (Although even that scene had people nervous about what was going to happen until the the actual sliming of Peter which then everybody laughed at.)

Ghostbusters is one of the greatest movies ever made and was a passion project for Dan Aykroyd (who is actually a lot like Ray himself as he loves and investigates the paranormal) so it's an absolute travesty that it has been remade with anybody let alone with all female Ghostbusters for a political agenda!

Sorry to post a Jian Ghomeshi video, it's just the best interview with Dan Aykroyd about ghosts that I could find and it really shows his passion about the subject. It really is like Ray is being interviewed!

I was particularly fond of the fake Sumerian gods and mythos they built on in passing reference, and how that related to the special architecture of the Shandor building.
