books are for fags. google and watch youtube. i recommend thenewboston and his java tutorial series. also oracle docs. no need for a book.

big java: nearly objects by cay horstmann is what we used in school. Gert the latest edition. But still you'll always need to supplement.

Good and Java should never appear in the same space.

PLs are tools. You should just pick the one best suited for the current situation and java can be great for backend web dev
