I'm going to be up-front here. I've jerked it to furry porn for years, almost exclusively these days, I've had a few friends that are furries. I've dated a fucking furry.
Yet I just cant get into it. The fursonas, the drama, the community, I just cant get into it and I have no idea as to why. Anytime I've tried to integrate myself into a group,I find myself just unwilling to go much further and end up reverting back into an outside observer. Am I just too autistic to be a furry?

Too autistic, too human, too poor, too boring, too normal, too sane, all of the above. Take your pick.
Even though I've got a fursona* I still have the same problems (except that i've never had furry friends). It's amusing that the slogan of furry is basically "we will take literally everyone who can at the very least tolerate dogs" yet it winds up being harder to get into than Area 51.
*technically i don't think of it as a fursona because it predates knowing furry existed, but to any outsider that's what it is. I'm basically only here today because I never got over the disappointment that furry wasn't actually a community for maladaptive daydreamers to share worldbuilding with animal people in it.

>Too everything
That's what it feels like a lot of the time. I'm too frugal to buy art because I don't want to waste money if I dont get into the community, but having art is one of the anchors that builds your legitimacy. I'm too much of a normie to really dive into the fandom, but also too weird to be part of mainstream society. I dont think I've ever been considered 'boring' but I really cant get into the drama that seems ever present within social groups of furries.
Its fucking depressing to think that I cant fit in with even the lowest-ppssible denominator on the internet.

Better to be a peasant in Heaven than a king in Hell. I too know what it's like to be stuck in the in between normalcy and internet autism, and at the end of the day it's probably for the best not to become part of such a mess.

I mean, on the one hand sure. But I dunno. I just dont have that many outside friends, and it's not that I'm not a socially-awkward guy. I just dont really live/interact with people my age or people whom I have stuff in common with. Internet friends are something I never really made either.

There isn't much of a larger "fandom" to get into anymore. Identity politics, lynchmobs, and "progressives" pretty much killed it, and what was left broke up into a bunch of sub groups.
And unfortunately as a side effect to that, all of said subgroups are highly defensive and volatile. Best thing you can do is just lurk around until you maybe find a small group of people you can befriend and hang out with, I'd stay away from large communities.

It has, yes, the difference is before it was relatively contained with a "just keep it out of my face" live and let live approach. There was plenty of drama and such, sure, but more often than not only when groups purposely clashed, and not "I just found out that they exist, and that's problematic!"
Nowadays there's this mentality that whatever a particular group that become the vocal majority doesn't like at the moment has to be purged completely and it becomes a spectator sport/pissing contest for how fast and many people you can shame and slander into quitting the fandom/internet, all under the guise of "improving the community".
▶ No.77111>>77113
>>77107
your nostalgia goggles are problematic and have to be purged to improve the community, unless you're looking back to something like usenet. and even then...
the fragmentation of the community is probably driven more by technology than by SJWs. Even now furry is relatively centralised, but with Twitter and Discord it's easier to just hang around with a subgroup than be forced to put up with a wider fandom. Especially since furry is so rarely "really" about the animal people, it's usually much more about a few individual, popular personalities. If you want to talk Robin Hood, why use Furaffinity Forums when you could join Discord's Robbin Hood chat? If you want to talk one artist, why use one big centralised site where they ignore your shouts when you could shitpost @ them on Twitter and occasionally get a like(favourite? i forget.). Then there's Tumblrs too.
The big thing with Discord, Twitter and Tumblr is that they all also stream content to your face. Your art gets a burst of attention as soon as it's released and then there's basically no slow-burn to popularity like there is with a gallery-style site like furaffinity. For the average non-autist, why dig with a spoon for content you like when you can be drowned in it every morning?
▶ No.77113>>91794
>>77111
The problem with fragmentation is that it allows people to only to receive information that supports what they already think. It's why it took /pol/ and Fox News viewers 18 months to realize that Trump is a complete retard; because while they were THERE, they were only being told how excellent he is for a very long time. It's easy to be fooled into believing that you're right when you shut out any and all voices that say you're wrong, and that happens easily and automatically now. With teeny tiny little insular communities that cater to every little thing these days (and software that "predicts" what people think and bombards them with more of the same) it's had the result of even completely insane sub-groups (like Flat Earthers) to see a rise in popularity. Essentially, everyone has gained the ability to surround themselves with yes men, and the insidious part is that it often happens without them completely realizing it. Times past, you saw balanced news on the ONLY three news networks (four if you count public broadcasting) and handful of local newspapers. But now, there's dozens of news networks for every political ideology and position, and even more online news sites --- and these have virtually no vetting process so can be the words of any Joe Schmo who can make a basic webpage. Whereas people used to be exposed to the entire rainbow, so to speak, now they can end up where day after day they only see the color yellow. Nothing but yellow, yellow, yellow from the handful of very censured and particular news media they consume. Pretty soon, they actually begin to believe that the entire world is really only yellow.

You can't really meaningfully interact with the furry as a 'fandom' unless you have a large (like rich trust fund daddy level large) quantity of disposable income, the ability to produce art (animation is even better) and a high level of autism. You need to not only wish to engage in petty drama but revel in it. The furry fandom is one of the most cancerous things on the planet but it's true.

Find literally any other fandom to be a part of if it's that important to you. Furry completely went to shit when it became the playground of art students with rich parents and a lack of guidance. Either take out a lone for that murrsuit and commission a few hundred pictures of your cancerous fursona or get the fuck out while you can. I mostly know that feel. The furry community at large isn't really engaging unless you're looking to blow lots of money on degenerate shit, or you're a massive slut, or you love petty drama.
I don't think you need to be super into the fandom in any mainstream (for furry) way to be a furry if you want. I'm basically just in a small server with a couple of chill bros and kooky cunts that I'm friends with. Sometimes we do furry stuff like share furry memes, or some yiff, or make some of our own art, but mostly we just hang out there. It's comfy.
I can help you design a fursona, anon. I just combined the 2 pokemon I liked the aesthetic of the most, because double the pokemon equals double the autism. Just pick something you like, doesn't even need to be an animal; you could be one of those airplane people or something; it doesn't really matter. Just don't make it overly flashy. Simple is better. I got another pokemon friend who's just a buizel with some kind of hat that he likes and aviators. Simple, but still recognizable as his character.

I much prefer information not being in the control of so few people. The issue was a million times worse before the internet, because the truth was much more easily suppressed. That's not to say technology can't become a tool of oppression in the wrong hands though- just look at China and its Social Credit system.

They're not exactly good at handling dissent, so they aggressively run off and publicly shame anybody that doesn't fit the current furfag zeitgeist. It's pretty consistent really- whether it's political views, religion, or even constructive criticism of popufurs and the fandom at large. It's so shitty because the fandom used to be all about that at one point, especially the Furcadia community.
Then there was a shift in the community as a whole, the age of the "Popufur" started. Fursonas became a thing and pushed characters out the window. Now everyone were obsessed with these Marry Sue's of themselves.
Then the world building stopped. Every roleplay has to be a club/bar/RL except furries. Then it all followed through.
Yeah there are the holdouts of the good 'ol days but they're becoming rarer and rarer as the agenda is pushed.
