It's not even the stigma. I'm well past caring about that, it's the fact I've persistently failed to join any furry communities. Why would I imply I'm a "member" of the fandom when my "membership" consists of standing at the periphery being ignored, and lamenting that failure on anonymous imageboards? Saying "I'm a furry" implies a wide number of things. "I like animal people" can be inferred from the fact I sat down and made a webcomic featuring them - everything else is either false (I know other furries, I have furry friends, I do things in furry communities) or nobody else's business and not an interesting topic to discuss. (i.e. Porn and Sex.)

Same reason /pol/ denies racism or pedophiles deny pedophilia- for all their "but it's normal" garbage they know it's looked down upon by the majority so they try to spin it.
