Starbound at its official launch honestly wasn't that bad; it just had a very weird and poor progression but for people with the autism that Minecraft and Terraria taps into, it was still a decent game - especially with friends.
Plus avians are a qt.

Agreed. The combat was my least favourite part for sure. The story was extremely underwhelming, but other than that the biggest flaw was how progression was fucked. I really really liked though how free you were to do anything and you actually could make progression off of it. Making a personal village was pretty great, even if the quests were pretty samey.

Starbound back when the only boss was the UFO penguins, there weren't any quests, and combat was simple, was pretty comfy. Just going around mining and building casually, listening to the chill music, with my totally-not-a-gay-metaphor flightless bird dude.
But then it just got tedious and boring and too much like Terraria with none of the good parts. Kill a boss to get the thing that allows you to mine the next type of ore, so you can build a new set of armor to kill the next boss to get the thing that allows you to mine the next type of ore, so you can build the next set... ugh. Bored me to death.

It's a pretty trash game, that I think has genuinely got worse on release.
Mostly because some retard decided to add a "story".
Avians are cool in it, though. Have some real worldbuilding that makes jazz pretty interesting.

I won't say that it was shit when it first came out. In fact, I liked it over Terraria, as it had a lot more potential for RP. It was more fun to explore in the game. But that was when Terraria didn't have much, and before they attached a shitty hub world place and a bunch of other gay jazz, like a standard cut backstory for all characters and a 'story'.
It became garbage.
The sooner you admit this, the sooner you can work around it.

I don't mind progression, mate. In the old game, we had slow progression. It took ages to bring yourself 'half way a cross the universe' as you put it. But, you did it with your own two talons. No bloody hubworld of gayass adventurers required.

That's kind of a lame way to put it because someone starting isn't going to particularly care about the current meta for a while in the first place, which by then everything will be changed to a completely different sort of cancer.
Aside from that, I don't think the current balancing is really that bad. Mercy sucks because she's still so necessary for teamfights but continues to be nothing but a healbot, and obviously good snipers are just.. good. For most players, the 'game ruining' kind of stuff will be that right around the Platinum-Diamond level there's a wide variety in skill as good clickers with bad game sense and bad clickers with good game sense clash together, which is just kind of a natural thing of objective-oriented skill-based games.

Old Starbound had so much better progression. They took out the temperature and old food system and replaced it with this busywork beef gate climate bullshit (Remember to backtrack to your ship menu to swap to clothing X for star color Y or you get instakilled in 3 seconds). We could've had something meaningful like reusing the water physics for airflow in space/high-altitude builds but instead we got a permanent yellow doom clock under the health bar that needs babysitting via sacrificing inventory space for hunting/cooking gear because the food expires and doesn't stack.
I mean shit, it's like they cherry picked the worst facets of every version of minecraft.

Just select "skip intro mission" when you create your character, and then after you fix your ship, you never have to return to the arc again
there is nothing on the arc you need to create any tier of tools, or any crafting ingredients at all that you can't get elsewhere for that matter
if you despise the arc so much that you can't stand spending 3 seconds there to talk to an old guy and watch a short cutscene then choosing not to upgrade doesn't lock you out of anything
