The divide depends. South/Central American furries like animu, so do folks from Spain and Portugal.

I used to be a huge anime fan, but dropped it for film because anime writing was formulaic and weaker. I only watch anime if it's technically good like Akira or Redline or done by Hiroyuki Okiura/Takeshi Koike, but there's not a lot of it out there. A lot of western anime fans have an unusual superiority complex to them despite not being good.

You clearly are not a kemono fan if you honestly think the numbers of even furry ARTISTS to kemono artists are that low. Western styles are most likely the dominating styles in the fandom but there is a hefty amount of Kemono.

Kemono is a minority in the big picture. Most furry as we know it is western Disney-inspired crap that popufur culture follows instead of the actual appreciation of anthropomorphic art. I hate the mob worship of fursonas so much. There needs to be more furry stories out there.

Anime and Furry pretty-much started off at the same time in the West/States as organized Fandoms doing much the same things (conventions, Fidonet, etc.)

But Furry stopped being a proper Fandom... because Fags.

Anime kept to the Fandom-of-Produced-Works aspect, where a 18 year-old newbie discovers there was more awesome cartoons & manga (& hentai & yaoi) to be found out about. Furry became foremost a social scene, and it became about what in-group you could get into. Oh? Furry prides itself on extreme sexual and identity fetishes now? ...not attractive to regular geeks.

It also didn't help that online Furries have little respect for Anime communities, in flooding their boards/sites with spam and O.C (..that no-one else is a fan of) for the past 20 years.

I was a bit surprised that Omaha The Cat Dancer was actually quite popular as an Alternative comic in its day, finding fans of it in unexpected places (..like a bunch of Yuppie Lesbians I met at Byron Bay)

Every so often I re-read a volume of Usagi Yojimbo, and get about 3/4 of the way in before the "FURRY FUCKED UP" thoughts overwhelm me.

People probably don't do those stories because it's easy to screw up or meet controversy. Current western fans will complain, shut down, and demand revisions if they see anything offensive to them.

You know the recent anti-abortion zootopia meme? It's funny, but those western activists tore it down (despite being a trope in romantic dramas) because they were unironically offended by a fox being mad. Porn seems to be an inoffensive and inclusive option, which is why most western artists do a lot of it.

However, eastern fans don't mind offensive content at all. They can handle any type of story without going SHUT IT DOWN, which is why they have cool shit like Daicon IV, Ghost In The Shell, Wings of Honneamise, and Akira. Like the 70s-80s western B-movie industry (which made great media like Mad Max and the Terminator), their creative industry is more strong because of their "live and let live" mentality. I would kill to have vid related equivalent in the fandom.

Anyway, you can't blame western furry artists for being perpetual amateurs when there is NO WAY AT ALL for them to get their work seen in a professional light. If Japanese artists have platforms where their work is supported and accepted, they have a clear advantage. It doesn't mean their art is automatically of some higher quality; you know goddamn well that "quality" is irrelevant next to popularity. Outside of major animation studios, literally nobody in the western world takes media based on furry characters seriously, and comics as a whole are a dying industry.

The issue isn't the content itself, just the artists and convention organizers who read and believe in those articles. So instead of a few retards, there's multiple ones who have a firm hold on geek culture by turning it into a high school clique from a bad 90s show.

With doujin circles, it's very deregulated and it doesn't have any witch hunts unless if you're performing the action of fucking things over. You rightfully get in trouble for piracy or stealing content without crediting, but your career isn't over because you made a rape/shota doujin once. It didn't prevent the Hellsing, Akira, Devilman, or Black Lagoon manga authors from making AAA anime.

Why the fuck would anyone ever want to become a "professional" artist? Do this shit once a week and you'd be making the same money as a doctor or lawyer. No animator working for Disney or whatever makes that much.

This makes me wonder if it would be possible to do written YCHs. Write literally an entire story, but leave the names and physical descriptions blank, only to fill them in when someone buys the slots. If nothing else, it might help reveal the total absurdity of the concept. Because this has just gotten way the fuck out of hand.

Japan's culture is different because of their anti-piracy stance. While you do get jailed for downloading content illegally, you also get a culture and industry filled with skilled artists with a dedicated customer base. The only thing that's personalized is a particular demographic, gay, straight, seinen, shojo, etc.

With western culture though, most folks feel entitled to get generalized stuff for free while paying a lot of money for personalized content. As a result, you get commissioned stuff like YCHs because comics aren't guaranteed to sell well.
