I've been stalking otherkin communities and archiving their shenanigans for almost a decade. I'm honestly thinking about writing a book about them because they're such a source of morbid curiosity for me. What made them this way? What hurt them so much? I have to know...
And my opinion is, generally, they're not bad people. Mostly they fall into four categories: teenagers experimenting with identity (will grow out of it in a few years), or they can be 'ascended roleplayers' who don't literally believe they are animals/characters but understand that they can be 'in character' full time in the otherkin community. Then there's people who think of it as a 'spiritual' identity rather than a literal one (basically wiccans). Finally there are people who are not teenagers, who literally believe they are animals or fictional characters and they are the ones who are dangerously delusional and usually also massive creeps outside of the 'identity' community.
I have lots of stories, though my favorite has to be the 'Pokemonkin' group, where a nearly 30 year old 'Sylveonkin' transwoman tried to solicit nudes from minor girls who just like pretending to be Charizards on the internet. I've posted screenshots of him before, but I don't have them on my phone.
