Fursuit building general, because I didn't see one.

Also because I am going to try building one, I purchased some materials and they should be arriving today and through next week.

Anyone here have a fursuit that they built? Any advice to give to a newbie?

 No.26702>>26711

Are you going to go for a somewhat unique style instead of the usual sameface?

 No.26711>>26717

>>26702

I am wanting to make it look identifiable without being too snowflakey.

It's really hard right now considering I don't even have a fursona, so choosing the species and the style is taking me a lot of mental effort. It doesn't help that I'm really indecisive either, and I'm not an artist. Can only get better by actually trying though!

Are you going to build fursuits for other people? Theres plenty of people who are willing to pay premium for quality fursuits

 No.26718

>>26717

I will admit the idea has crossed my mind, building fursuits for others. But at the same time, I feel it would be very stressful trying to make a unique suit look good EVERY time.

My first few will probably not look the greatest. Probably not too much unlike the second images level of quality. When I get to a high quality level, I might consider it.

But yeah, not having a fursona and wanting to build a fursuit does seem pretty ironic! I have to do a lot of thinking/drawing before I make the first cut in this foam I have. Definitely a change in pace from the usual work I do.

Considering the size of most of the eyes, I doubt it's that bad.

Though, this gave me an idea.

We could put an upside-down fib-op periscope with an anti-reflection coating + device near the nostrils (broached for better FOV).

With the eyes freed up, we can hook the eyes up to planetary gears hooked up to silent motors hooked up to a pre-programmed logic chip hooked up to a 3-axis motion sensor (the same thing that's in some smartphones).

And voila, the most over-engineered fursuit ever.

 No.26891>>26892 >>26893 >>26897 >>41634

>>26877

If I ever build a fursuit, it's going to be hilariously overengineered, particularly the cooling system. See, I'm the kind of guy who puts out absurd amounts of body heat. I sleep naked even in the winter, and sometimes with the covers off. I can't have sex without the air conditioning going or we both overheat. I'm like those fucking yogis who can stand outside in the snow wearing dripping-wet towels, and dry them. So there's no way I could ever just stick a fan inside the damn head and be okay, oh no. If I'm to have a suit, it will have to contain one of those NASA undergarments continuously cycling cool water. I've already figured out that I will use a backpack to hold the refrigeration equipment and radiators and fans. This will do double-duty as a prop to better signal my fursona being a cub/schoolchild. And if I ever have a murrsuit to actually have sex in... well, we'll just have to do it in a literal goddamn walk-in freezer.

Of course, while I'm fantasizing, I can assume I will have motion-trackers following my own eyes, and a tail that also moves. Maybe I can hook that thing up to a some kind of control device in my hand so I can make it wag on command. Heck, instead of building some kind of periscope, it would be better to just mount cameras onto the eyeballs and project it onto my eyes via a VR unit so I retain depth perception. There's just the issue of limiting signal lag in between the motion-tracking system and the visual display;you'd likely end up getting motion sickness if it's more than a few microseconds, I'd imagine.

If you use a decent phone with any of those cheap vr headsets you can get pretty good input responses. The movement appears pretty seamless when I use mine.

My eyes are REALLY bad, so that is something I thought about too. It would make for a cool cyberpunk themed suit, as well.

Not all of those cheap vr headsets are manufactured correctly though, so you may have to fiddle around with googles vr headset developer tools to get the image distortion free. I had to use the tool because my prescription lenses have strong prisms built in them as well as strong correction for nearsightedness.

I don't have any on my computer. I've just seen a few where usually it's the style of clothing that give it away (or it they've got a diaper and a pacifier; but I really consider cub and ABDL to be completely different things). Pic related is something I found on google that I think is easily recognizable as a cub, mostly because of the boy scout gear; the forced-perspective helps, too. I'd consider putting my character in overalls because they're adorable and childish, but his coat patterns are just so pretty that it would be a waste to go through all that effort and then cover it up.

The main issue is that furry characters as a whole, and especially with fursuits (because of the large head and short stumpy limbs) are proportioned like children. They also typically include neotenous features like large eyes, ears, and paws. This is due to Western cartoon characters exaggerating those traits to being with, which carries over to character designs. The physical limitations of a fursuit (being simply placed over a human) enhances this effect even more. Pic related #2 illustrates this with that one fursuit and da Vinci's ideal man. You can see how (with the exception of the digitigrade-knees being a bit too high) the fursuit represents a classic cartoon character who is five heads tall, but an actual man is more like eight heads tall. The suit's proportion, in reality, is more like a 10-12 year old than an adult.

I think by the time you got to something that was recognizably "younger" than the average fursuit, it would be proportioned like an infant. Obviously, I wouldn't want to go that far.

That's one I'd seen before. I think I might just have to accept a separation between the actual character design and any hypothetical fursuits, for sake of preserving a cub style of the suit. I probably can't get away with having him be digitigrade, or have a large enough tail, or be more "realistic" instead of "toony" (considering realism skews away from cuteness), and if I put him in overalls, most of his patterns won't be showing; I guess I should be satisfied enough that his head is distinctive.

>>27011

>>27013

To be fair, googling "fursuit Mercury" gets you a maker of fursuits, not him; and "generic grey-and-white fox" is hardly distinctive enough to recognize unless you have a disturbingly encyclopedic knowledge of fursuiters. Searching for it on FA doesn't work unless you already know that's his EXACT username. Searching normally just returns a shitload of submissions with Mercury in the title. There's probably a way to search by artist name, but I can't find it offhand and don't know it.

I suppose it's entirely possible that you are rich --- after all, a middle-school education is about all it requires to succeed in business these days, just ask Trump — but I somehow seriously doubt it. Rich people actually do things, even if they're alone; they don't spend their time on imageboards because they were not raised on them so have to love for them. They also don't give a fuck about fursuits.

>you're 25 with a blue/green fix durrsona

Wrong on both counts I'm five years older, and a black/white/grey/orange coonfox. Though the age you picked is interesting. It's not young enough to be an insult for someone older toward someone younger; they tend to go with teenagers or 20 at the highest. It's also not old enough for someone who is a young adult; they tend to go for a number around 35-40 as that is "old" to them. It IS, however, about what a teenager thinks is the threshold for "old" --- and a younger teenager, because someone 18 doesn't think 25 is quite so old anymore.

Therefore, I have estimated you age, based on that "insult", to be 14 or 15, or maybe an immature 16. This is fun, a bit like playing keep-away with a tennis ball and a small dog. Let's continue this exercise later.

Most fursuits look like giant pijamas. If people are trying so hard to achieve a "twink-ish" look, isn't combining fake fur/fluff with tight shirts a better way to do so?

I imagine those see-through shirts mostly used in raves with fur covering them. The look you'd achieve should be a lot slimer but the heat would probably be way worse.

Thoughts?

Honestly, I think the best way to avoid both overheating and the "bag" look is just to wear normal clothes with a well-made head, paws, gloves, and a tail. Making a good full-suit takes either a lot of money or a lot of talent (and they still end up badly-proportioned), so I think for most people the best bang-for-your buck is to just go with a partial.

OP here. I actually started building, so I thought I would post a few pics showing my progress.

First is a pic of the foam base so far. I spent a lot of time on the placement of the eyes because I HAVE to wear glasses inside while wearing the head, otherwise I will be blind. And my glasses are very thick, so I have cut some reliefs into the foam base to alleviate the pressure on my head. I may have to just outright remove some of that material if its still bad.

Lastly is a pic of the balaclava. It's the first thing iv'e sewn since middle school 11 years ago. I almost quit 5 minutes into it, as my hands are not very dexterous. Not to mention again my eyes aren't very good, so I had to hold the project about 5-6 inches from my face the whole time to make sure I was stitching right. I think I did ok all considering.

I'll keep posting as I progress.

OP again.

I attached the foam base to the balaclava. I wanted to make sure my head would be aligned properly with my eyes, so I carved some foam off of the mannequin head that I have so I could put my glasses onto it in the correct position

I placed the glasses onto the mannequin head, then slipped the balaclava over them, and placed the foam over the eyes where they needed to be. Then to make sure the foam didn't shift as I was working with it, I pinned it in place onto the head.

I tried it on afterwards and it fits really nice so far! It's a little difficult to get over my glasses though, and I accidentally ripped some of the material that was leftover from making the reliefs. I'll just remove them since I am adding foam there anyways.

I've only seen moving ears & tail and a jaw that can kind of move when you speak.

I keep thinking it might be possible to use skin sensors rigged to the head to mimic what your face is doing. Arduino and some miniature hydraulics using contracting rubber hose.

Is it possible to make a head that isn't so oversized?

My biggest issue with fursuits preventing me from ever getting one is how cartoony the fur is. I've only seen good looking fur on like two. Ever.

The issue is that a human head isn't shaped like a canine head (let's just stick with canine because that's probably what it is 90% of the time), or even the idealized human/canine hybrid head. You can't just stick a muzzle on the front of a human skull and call it done; it won't be the right shape at all. You also can't make a canine-shaped head the same scale as a human head, unless you're willing to saw off a sizable portion of your frontal lobe to get the right forehead slope. So the only way to make it work without looking the wrong shape is to scale the canine head LARGER, so your oversized human braincase can fit inside of it.

>>27855

Skill range is irrelevant; arduino is so simple that a kindergartener can figure it out. The real issue is that it would likely double the cost for what is already a $5000 fursuit, adding a bunch of electronics and sensors and hydraulics and things, for very little gain. Do you really think anyone at the cons is going to give a shit that you put in that level of effort and technological expertise? All the most popular suiters are wearing perfectly ordinary cartoony fursuits. It's a low-effort fandom; high-effort is just wasting your time and money.

This thing STILL doesn't have a muzzle, lmao. I got called back into work for a while so I haven't been able to work on it everyday.

Iv'e been working on it today though, I am fixing an issue with the fit, it was pulling up on my face and pulling on my glasses. I thought it was because the top was too tight, but I found it was actually because I glued the balaclava to the base above my eyes. so now I have to close the top again.

I also bought some samples of fur so I can see what it looks like and to practice trimming and stitching too before I ruin the expensive stuff.

Who is that and who made the suit?

That's the body type I'm looking for. I don't want my suit to have that baggy mascot look. I want it to look and feel almost like a morphsuit but not as tight. I want it to fit and look tight, but still be able to move freely. I want something like the one on the left.

>>41626

That's nice looking, who made it?

And how feasible would it be to get a nice head and some paws for a partial, and then commission the bodysuit later? My fear is that if I do it that way I might end up with a head and body that don't match.

Depends if you have airbrushing or not. With airbrushing, spot-clean outside and deodorize with disinfectant spray on the inside.

No airbrushing and you can either:

a. Drop in a detergent filled tub and gently wash by hand

b. Ultra-delicate cycle in washing machine inside-out

Dry it with fur out, then brush.

None of this is autism, either. If they're socially sound enough to be your friend and go out in public doing normie shit like muh lifting, they don't have autism, no matter how easily they convinced a doctor with an agenda to push, that they do.
