I've worked with about a dozen different Russian artists so far and thrown more money at them than I want to know, so I think I'm qualified to offer my opinion here. I'm 2 weeks late with this reply, but oh well
They tend to offer much lower rates for any given level of skill, plus there's just something that makes me like working with them more too. I suspect that Russian artists are more likely to have a genuine interest in art that they then later use to draw furry shit, whereas many "Western" artists may only get into art because they like furry shit and then want to learn to draw it as a result. It's at least the impression I've gotten.
What you will have to look out for though is very few can type in perfect English, so you will need to get a feel for what they're actually trying to say. Most that I have worked with have an understanding of English that's just a step above google translate, so you'll need to speak in simple terms that would be easy to translate. Only a very small minority of them are good enough at English that it doesn't really stand out that they're not a native speaker. Miscommunications will happen, but I've found that most are happy to correct those mistakes if you are polite and reasonable about it. As with any artist, give them the sniff test and try to get a feel of how likely they are to actually do your thing and to do it properly.
Know what you're getting into, but I definitely like working with them. Just be smart about things and you'll be good. I've been in the game 4 years and never been scammed once. Be polite and courteous, but make sure to still stand up for yourself if an artist tries to pull some bullshit on you.

I don't see an issue in this stuff much to be entirely honest. If I were an artist, I would want to have more of my work be with content that I like than with content I don't care for at all. As I see it, the core of the issue is keeping the artist happy with the work they are given without it becoming overly burdensome to other people who would want art too. Someone being given a discount doesn't hurt anyone else in queue. It might be upsetting to see people get discounts that you aren't getting, but if you agree to a price and then get upset when you have to pay that price you agreed to, then the issue is on you. Making it a little easier for friends to get slots than average Joe is fine too if it can be done without stepping on anyone's toes. When looking at this sort of problem, I like to try to view it from the perspective of the artist, the artist's preferred clients, and the average Joe.
I will not begrudge an artist wanting to charge a slight premium for hating my character or something like that. In fact, I think it's dumb for the client to willingly buy art from an artist that they know does not want to draw for them. It does show in the final product when the artist cares, so I try my best to find artists who will like the ideas or characters that I have to offer. All of that said, artists drawing for the same few people over and over again without taking on much stuff from new people is one of my bigger pet peeves.

Yeah, that's the real kicker. When an artist isn't upfront with you about them disliking your idea, that's pretty annoying to me. When they use that dislike as an excuse to delay your piece and start work on a new batch of commissions instead, that's when they'll really start to get on my nerves. If they keep on that route and it's close to 180 days and they still don't want to work for me, I'm doing a paypal refund whether they want me to or not. If I'm spending money on an artist, I fully expect them to be able to deliver on what they promised me (or at least have a good reason why I need to wait). I'm not paying someone if they're not going to do what I paid them to do. Communication can solve so many problems you'll have with commissions, but it still takes two to tango. Whatever I'm doing seems to work as I've never lost any money or had to press the refund button myself yet.

I suppose you'll just have to take me on my word here, but I don't actually get much in the way of benefits from anyone aside from preferential slot treatment (because to them, I am a reliable, no-fuss client that is easy to work with). I used to be the random nobody to whichever artist though and I do my best to not forget that.
With the preferential slot treatment, I use that to give myself flexibility on when I can claim a spot in queue with the "downside" here being that I have to be flexible on when they do it (which is usually after finishing their existing queue or in between two complicated pieces from other clients). I will explicitly tell artists I work with closely that I do not want to let them have this turn into me getting way more slots than anyone else is able to get otherwise.
A rather talented artist that I used to be friends with was really nice to work with and did lots of work for people who weren't regulars, but they slowly started to make themselves more and more exclusive over time. It's been over a year now since I've given them even a single penny. They were the one artist who actually would give me discounts or the occasional free 60 second scribble, but I'm still not coming back to them until they can be more open with who they work for again.

I find a lot by looking at the favorites of people who interact with my stuff. By doing it this way, it makes it so I'm looking at people who usually have some shared interests with me and that I am looking at the stuff they enjoyed too. If you have little to no following on FA, you can instead look at people commenting on pictures you like, faves of the people who you know like the stuff you like, or something else along those lines. Looking at other people's faves has easily been my #1 way of finding new artists.
I wouldn't call it hard so much as I would time consuming. One of the easiest ways to make a picture not be to your liking in my experience is to rush on selecting an artist for the picture. It's probably good that you're being picky about it, so I guess this is more to reaffirm that. It always feels like the artist you need isn't out there, but unless you're wanting some super specific niche kink that only 3 other people in the entire world are into, then it's probably just that you've not found those other artists yet. There have been many times where I have felt like I'd never find an artist to do some specific thing to my liking, but in every case, I eventually did find an artist for it. Sometimes it will take a long time, so you just have to learn to wait.
If you're wanting an artist to draw a specific kink but having trouble finding an artist to do it, sometimes all you have to do is see if they've done something similar in a promising manner, then just ask. With the snow leopard covered in cum here >>108440 the artist had no similar piece in their gallery prior to that. They had some pictures with cum, but was all fairly normal amounts (by furry standards). What cum she had drawn though was drawn very well, so I just asked her and she said yes. Several other people have now gotten similar pieces from her thanks to me getting it. I've seen similar things happen with people asking for something like macro too with different artists. In the case of macro, before asking, I'd just check to see if it looked like the artist was good at backgrounds, extreme perspectives, or other shared traits.

when I pay for a commission, like everyone else I expect to at least eventually receive my image, which is a pretty normal and reasonable thing to expect especially when the artist has no written statements saying that you not only have to pay for the image to be made but you also have to pay to even see what the fuck it even turned out to be

Imagine being so fucking entitled that you, under no legally binding signed contracts, exchange funds under no obligations other than the fact that an image to your specifications be created, and expect to have any rights to this image or to even receive a copy of it, as if you seriously have no idea what it even fucking means to commission somebody. You put in an order to have an image be made and paid for this to happen. Okay, fine. Many artists then would want you to pay them via paypal, and say that the money is being given to a friend rather than exchanged for a nondescript 'digital good'. Did that happen to you? Then that's where you fucked up. Eat shit. You can't chargeback in that situation because legally you did nothing besides gift some money to a 'friend'. You cannot say that you didn't receive something you paid for because when you threw away your money, it wasn't done under terms in which anything states that you are meant to receive anything back for it. Better luck next time, I'm sure your charitable donation is appreciated~

I'm an artist who makes a living doing furry art full time.This would never happen. There is this psychological thing where you can be insanely productive and fast, when the workload is massive.
And then the closer you get to point X, which is the hypothetical point at which you've turned in all commissions, every commissioner has replied 'awsome, no more revisions due thank you so much' and you've gotten back to all of them with a last 'ty for your commission' response email... The closer you get to that day you'll find your productivity decreasing. It's completely bizarre and makes no sense at all but it is SO incredibly real. Like a chewed bubblegum that bends and stretches, defying logic.
For this reason there's no point in even trying to 'clear the entire backlog'. And I've had 3-10 commissions due literally every day for the past 2 or so years.
