I am getting /fit/ for freedom. I want to have the freedom to run through the woods at top speed and jump over rocks and scramble down cliffs without hurting myself. I want to be able to dive headfirst into a lake and swim to the other side, climb a tree, then jump back into the lake and do it again. It's an okay reason to start out, but once you get the ball rolling, it becomes a weak foundation. We're a small group and the majority of persons in there have a stronger grappling background while I have a stronger striking background. I'm the better striker of the group I like to think though I still have a ways to go. But sparring and actual combat are very different as we have to pull hold back while sparring.

For me it's preparation for old age. When I'm 75+ years old I want to be doing one-armed pushups, playing sports, and running marathons. I don't want to be some tired, fat old geezer who gets to watch young people move around.

You have to realize though that if you have some formal practice in a martial art then you're already leagues above the average person in terms of fighting ability. Though of course you could say that it isn't the average person that would be out to mug you or something like that.

Now I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I'd imagine that more than anything being able to keep a level head during a situation where someone poses a threat to you will always be the defining factor in coming out of it unharmed

Only being able to throw one particular punch, but doing it well while keeping calm > knowing fancy fighting moves but still being a jumpy cunt in a real life situation

It also goes without saying, but running away when possible will always be the best option. No need to hurt yourself if you can help it.

Trying to get into a fight to test your strength is karate kid level cliche
