You have to realize though that if you have some formal practice in a martial art then you're already leagues above the average person in terms of fighting ability. Though of course you could say that it isn't the average person that would be out to mug you or something like that.
Now I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I'd imagine that more than anything being able to keep a level head during a situation where someone poses a threat to you will always be the defining factor in coming out of it unharmed
Only being able to throw one particular punch, but doing it well while keeping calm > knowing fancy fighting moves but still being a jumpy cunt in a real life situation
It also goes without saying, but running away when possible will always be the best option. No need to hurt yourself if you can help it.
