Where does the whole "cardio kills gains" come from? I mean if being huge means not being able to run more than five feet then i dont think i want to be huge. Now that i think about it my parents did use to tell me stories of them having to go get huge guys off hills back when they were in the forest service cus they couldnt walk up the fuckin thing without passing out.

benching is a waste of time unless you want to be a powerlifter

c919f9  No.132659

Because long distance running can burn alot of calories and it will burn muscle mass before fat. While sprinting burns fat instead of muscle. I recommend HIIT for cardio it raises your metabolism and sprinting feeds the muscle rather than destroy it.

>>132657

It's a decent test of upper body strength some special forces units use it as a benchmark for upper body strength.

But I agree I think weighted pull ups or overhead press is more of a better test for upper body strength than the bench.

Tfw when I can’t even do 1 p8 after 2 years of lifting.

TBH though I stopped trying to bench and only work chest indirectly.

>Where does the whole "cardio kills gains" come from?

It's a meme spouted by lazy fatasses (aka powerlifters) who think it's manly to roid and deadlift twice their bodyweight but die of heart failure in their 30's and 40's.

8e4d09  No.132695

Cardio is pointless, it doesn't build muscles very much. Lift weights instead.

I don't think it 'kills gains', but it burns calories which could be used for better things like gaining, lifting and homeostasis. Food costs money, you know. Maybe if you want to eat crap like cookies and cakes then you should run a bit to burn that trash off but otherwise I don't see the point unless you're cutting.

>muh circulatory system, muh heart

>implying lifting weights or any other form of reasonably intense exercise doesn't also train this

>implying deadlifting twice your bodyweight is impressive

>implying powerlifters are lazy

also dropping the word "roid" is a strawman argument

Long distance cardio won't necessarily burn muscle before fat, but the body is great at adapting to stresses. If your body knows that it will have to be running for long distances, it will know that excess mass (of any type) will make the long distance running more difficult, so you will tend to drop a lot of both muscle and fat. For someone trying to build muscle, I would limit running distances to 5 km, but up the pace to make it worth your while.

>Name one benefit of cardio.

<increased life expectancy

<improved performance when bodybuilding (i.e. little rest between sets of medium intensity)

<no huffing and puffing when going up a single flight of stairs

<people won't make fun of you for being a meathead who can't run a mile without keeling over

Pic related is the natty physique of a guy who runs 6 miles every single goddamn day.

Go run a couple miles and then kill yourselves (if the running doesn't kill you first).

That doesn't even seem possible I've only been lifting seriously for ~13 months and my 1RM is close to 2p8 (215lb currently). I think it took me less than a couple months to get to 1p8 and believe me I was a weakfag when I started. Are you sure you're eating right and resting properly?

>>132678

It IS a meme but cardio (at least as practiced by most people) is at best a waste of time.

Lifting will do wonders for your cardiovascular system far more than slowly plodding on an elliptical while watching TV for an hour like half the people at my gym seem to do.

If you don't want to lift or want something supplementary instead do 20 minutes of HIIT or better yet get some friends and play a few games of basketball or other high intensity sport.

combat

cardio is essential to perform in hand to hand combat, to sustain long marches, and to reposition quickly in an urban environment

not to say everyone needs this but if you have no cardio you will perform poorly in emergency situations such as these

Yes, this is a well known observation reported in the scientific literature. Burning muscle mass is referred to as one aspect of catabolism. Endurance running is a highly catabolic activity that causes the body to eat its own muscles for fuel.
