I'm looking at taking martial art classes at a school that teaches a bunch of different styles all at once (Bagua, Wing-Chun, Bajiquan, Shaolin Kung-Fu, Tai Chi and others I don't remember)

This is to get rid of my weight I've gained from bad eating habits and I'm also looking at improving my flexibility and upper body strength to get toned muscles, not looking to get huge.

How do you anons feel about it?

General Martial Art thread too I suppose

It’s good if you know how to throw a punch or stab a gypsy with a broken beer bottle but in general it’s overrated.

The upcoming war will be fought from a distance. You’re better off learning how to operate a grenade launcher, a drone or a helicopter. Kek nigger, what are you going to do with a spin kick when there’s mini choppers with laser guns operated from Tel Aviv chasing you down the street while it’s raining fire meteors from the sky?

OP WATCH THE FUCK OUT! ALL THESE PLACES ARE SCAMS! they ask you for money and fees and equipement and all this shit and then they force you to learn stupid shit you don't care about and not what you came there to learn, then if you leave they fuck you with the contract they made you sign.

often times you get hurt while learning how to defend yourself, it's fucking bullshit so only go to a good class that doesn't do membership fees and lets you wear your own clothes. only trust a teacher that the students trust. if they just seem to do what they say but don't really love them, and I mean LOVE them, stay the fuck away.

Martial arts are great ways to build self-confidence, coordination, balance, and endurance. Taking a martial arts class motivated me to get fit and adjust my workout routine to have exercises that would enhance my martial arts.

Taking a martial arts class for self-defense is a meme. 95%+ of self defense is threat recognition and avoidance, if you're in a situation where you need your martial arts to defend yourself or someone else you're either a retard or insanely unlucky.

It's important to make sure you're not going to a McDojo or somewhere that's trying to scam you for money. Do your research and ask a lot of questions to make sure anywhere you'd go to learn martial arts isn't a fucking fraud.

That said, a good martial arts class has a whole wealth of benefits beyond personal defense that make it above and beyond worth learning one. If you want real personal defense, get a CCP and don't be retarded.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A MARTIAL ARTS GYM:

•Physically conditioned, fit participants

•Trainer with certified professional record and a training history with at least one athlete who competes successfully

•Sparring, "aliveness" in training

•At least one participant competes at amateur or professional level

•Physical conditioning part of training

WHAT TO BE WARY OF:

•Fat, physically subpar students and instructor

•Graduation fees (e.g. "pay $200 and advance to next belt extra quick!")

•No proven athletes training there

•No sparring, moves shown are choreographed (e.g. "the attacker does this, then I do this, then you do this…")

•Cult-like atmosphere

•No physical conditioning

OP here. Glad I didn't join. I was right to be skeptical.

>$195 up front and $100 each month

>2 classes a week. If I want daily classes I have to get into the instructor program, but only after six months of training and first belt; this would then be $200 a month.

>$75 belt fee for each rank.

>grandmaster runs the place and teaches, but doesn't look like he's above 40.

>Owner's teacher runs a McDojo.

>Buy our DVD to keep you in constant training! it's $30.

>Look at all the weapons we have. You can own this sword or knife for $1-25.

>Billed as a full contact fighting school, but trains children in classes separated from adults. Not abnormal to me.

Fairly convincing compared to the glorified "family fun" McDojos in the area. Looks like I'll have to travel or take up training by myself without a teacher if I don't want to fall for the bullshido.

A good school is hard to find. Most places around me give the same $150 a month for two a week deal. My old fighting gym I was paying $125 a month for unlimited classes. I did Muay Thai and Sambo for a year before it closed. I'm lucky enough to have found my old coach from that place had rented a hole in the wall and he trains a handful of people. Only charges me $80 a month for four days. Pretty good deal for Combat Sambo.

These are all worthless wastes of time. If you just want to "get toned" then do some pullups and shit. If you want to learn a martial art do one that actually works.

Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Kyokushin karate and the less common ones like Savate and Sambo are also worthwhile.

Basically do they practice full contact sparring? Is it used in MMA/Vale Tudo? If the answer is yes then it's worth doing, if the answer is no then it's worthless bullshit.

Except you can train judo or BJJ for your entire life and be completely fine. Helio Gracie was still rolling in his 80s. Breaking your spine is a freak occurrence.

Cumulative brain damage after hard sparring/matches in striking arts is a certainty. It might affect you to a greater or lesser degree but it's happening every time you get hit in the head.

Judo is called "the gentle way" precisely because you can train it long term without getting fucked up.

Forget the grenade and rocket launchers.

>>131627

Having actually trained in aikido for a few years, this is stupid and your MA friend should feel bad. I will agree that aikido is a reflection of the time and place it was developed and doesn't have a lot of applicability to civilian defense today against what (trained person) you'll normally run up against (grapplers). However aikido (not ki aikido bullshit) does respect the loss of fine motor movements when the SHTF and offers devastating counterattacks. Some of the hardest hits I've taken.

Against the majority of people (untrained morons) aikido will serve you very well. Just takes much more time to get to a reasonable level versus something like wing chun, boxing, muay thai, etc.

Thinking of it, practicing nocturnal awareness in adverse situations would be useful as well. Most people would be completely lost if you threw them in a forest in the middle of the night and left them there on their own. Talking hikes in the woods at night (best when it rains) with shitty shoes could emulate a legitimate SHTF fight or flight situation. It's also pretty scary and will force you to cope with fear

So, hijacking this thread. Recently I started to workout seriously with 2 dumbbells of 5kg each, and long time ago I used to love Karate, so to not lose form and regain my flexibility I started doing things from memory. So far so good, I'm really flexible again and I can punch like a beast when I pack the dumbbells to be 10kg. Problem is, I forgot all the kihon even when I remember all katas.

So, long story short, recommend me some good kihon to practice outside my katas that are near perfect at this point, and maybe some dumbbell exercises to go with them.

>What is best for real-life fights with rapefugees

You have to consider how these things happen:

>if someone starts taunting you, you can't just start hitting them

>first you need to try and be street smart

>IF this fails, it's most likely going to be someone grabbing you

>which means you need grappling

>the problem with this is that if you face a group of people, you can't ever start rolling around on the ground because someone else will then easily hit you in the back of the head while you're holding one guy down

>so you need to be able to quickly get out of the hold and create a distance while standing

>maybe by then someone brings out a knife

>which means your only real option is to run

>if you're cornered you have a small chance to kick the knife hand before the guy gets close

…and that's about it. Avoid groups of people, keep distance, don't provoke them. Or get a firearm or if you can't for legal reasons get mace or something, your goal is to just get out of there alive, not to stay and fight.

Despite what it says about kickboxing being awful outside of Thailand, Germany has its good gyms. If you're close to the Netherlands, even better. A straight kickboxing rather than a MT gym works well if it's a Dutch one, too.

A little more rare are sanda gyms. There's three in Belgium and about double that in the Netherlands, I think, but they're far from the border. It's basically the same shit, coopted by the Chinese with some throws added to the mix. No groundwork, though.

Exercise and stretch your neck religiously. Not just isolated, but in conjunction with the whole body (e.g. cobra stretch and wrestler exercises).

Strengthen your jaw; use a towel and just pull and tug or lift something.

And you know when you tense and you turn beet red? Do that for your neck; it'll improve vessel strength. Don't do it much though… maybe you'll get a blood clot and die :)

Karate is a waste of time once you learn the basic punches and kicks, and even if you do find a good school for teaching strikes, a lot of the time the instructor will be gearing towards tournament Kumite which is "valid" for the art but absolute horseshit for practicality.
