So guys, tell me about Rucking.

I was listening to an episode of "the art of manliness" on the topic with this guy selling backpacks and "ruck plates" for it. I'll boil it down from my perspective:

It's basically walking, but while wearing a backpack with heavy weight in it. The guy sold it as "cardio that builds muscle and is less hard on your knees than running". I figured I could do it while walking my dog, and I have a water bladder. Thought I could suggest it as something I could do with my brother since he used to be in the military and has gained a ton of weight since becoming a dad and is always looking for some fix or exercise he can do that'll get him back in shape and then utterly fucking up his health by going way too far into it.

Thing is, do I really need to buy their special equipment? I mean, can't I just get a cheap backpack and stuff some of my free weights into it? The stuff on the site is like 300 bucks for a backpack and another hundred at least for the weights.

It's been said before, rucking only makes you better at rucking. You'll only gain the giant calves an active fat person has.

>The guy sold it as "cardio that builds muscle and is less hard on your knees than running". I

But it's even worse for your spine though

From experience, walking around with heavy ass shit in your backpack doesn't do any favours to your back- try to get one that has straps on your chest and midsection, lessens the strain on your back a bit and helps keep a nice upright posture.

Depends on your backpack load distribution, strapping, and posture.

Weighted leg/arm bracelets are an anime tier gimmick, but weighted vested/packs are decent.

Once went on a 16 mile ruck out of the blue (first ruck ever) with 70 pounds of plates in a regular backpack.. I was able to do it but I seriously couldn’t even walk right after it for about 24 hours and couldn’t hit the gym for a couple days. I’d advise getting a weight vest at Dicks, they help distribute weight evenly and correctly unlike just plates in a backpack which fucks up your shoulders and spine cause of how awkward it is.
