Not a meme, to be a meme it has to be popular and jew-jitsu is not. In fact, it's widely regarded as a poorly thought-out hodgepodge of fighting styles by anyone in the know.
If your goal is to learn fighting styles supposed to work in "real life situations" focus on learning the techniques that are prohibited in athletic competition (pic related). Most of those are banned because they work a little too well, and can cause severe body injury or death.
Take into account many techniques that work in a sport setting don't translate that well to the street, as people are not usually walking around shirtless while wearing gloves. That's why disciplines that take clothing into account, like Judo, and that teach you striking without gloves, like (full contact) Karate, are the best choice for self-defense.
On the other if you just want to have fun, train whatever you like or whatever is more accessible to you. Personally I suggest learning boxing first, as it is, BY FAR, the most important skill, then follow up with (Dutch-style) kickboxing, which is basically the same boxing with added kicks (largely borrowed from Karate), then move to either Muay Thai or Savate (du Rue) for the knees and elbows.
Any grappling will do, but in athletic competition freestyle wresting and any no-gi jujitsu variants seems particularly successful.
