tl;dr, I have fucked up knees, how do I strengthen them?

New to /fit/, typically lurk /b/.

Currently don't work out, but still keep non-fat figure. Luck is running out as I get older, though, and I need to start living healthier. I can't rely on good metabolism forever.

Problem is, I fucked my knees up in high school and they never really recovered. Makes running a pain and the thought of dead lifting difficult. Used to do long distance running, and the last time I was into it was two years ago, running 8-10k a workout. Now, I do nothing and have a full time sedentary job.

If you're curious about how I injured my knees, I rammed my left knee into concrete by accident, I'm not retarded, thus rupturing the bursa sac and causing it to swell to the size of a (pomelo) grapefruit. While that was healing I couldn't bend my left knee and I leaned on my right leg for a few months. That wore down my right knee, and is now my weakest/most irritable.

I have several braces for them, and I get through a run with them and some form of acetaminophen. Currently looking for places nearby with lots of soft ground to run on (a predictable suggestion), as well as exploring better postures to sit in while at work and home.

Any other things I should try?

My knees creak when they bend, and one time when I increased the amount of walking I was doing significantly I experienced mild pain in one of my knees when putting weight on it at a certain angle. I've been taking pic related since (which is a (((Schiff))) product, mind you), and it wasn't long before the pain subsided. My knees feel 'stronger', as well. They still creak when they bend, but my mother took this stuff for a long time and she claims that her knees stopped creaking when they bend as a result, so I'm going to continue taking them to see if it fixes my knees.

I don't know what it is in it that works, but something does. Nor do I have the slightest clue whether it would help with your problem.

I think both Costco and Sam's sells a drink called Joint Juic. It has 25kcals/bottle and all of the joint supps you need. Take it with fish pil and practice third.qorld squatting for 30 seconds 3x/week.

Otherwise do a lot of elliptical and swimming work to lose the weight to help your knees.

I appreciate the suggestions. Looking further into the products you both suggested, I found a couple sources citing a "GAIT" Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial study. Apparently these products use both Glucosamine HCL and Chondroitin Sulfate, but the most effective chemical for joint pain is Glucosamine Sulfate, which is more of a prescription drug. If it ever gets so bad that I can't walk normally without rousing the pain in one or both of my knees, I will go to a doctor for a prescription solution.

Before that point, though, I will try out the third world squat idea. I'll also look into proper squat workouts as well, as I read today (while looking up what I mentioned before) that building the muscle around the joint helps more with joint pain than taking a supplement.

Look into provolone or gouda style cheeses. You might also enjoy goat cheese. Just go to a sprouts or whole foods and ask if you can sample the goat cheese.

Kale is an ok source of calcium as are sardines, almonds, broccoli, etc. I'd suggest getting something like calcium gummies over a calcium supp since you really need to chew your calcium. Mineral water also has trace amounts of calcium.

Do you drink coffee/if so do you use cream? Try getting a good brand of milk (read: not generic) and using that in your coffee. It'll increase your risk of kidney stones, but the water you drink during exercise should counteract that.

If your goal is calcium, even skim milk is alright. I didn't think about it before, but almond or coconut milk would work as well. Califia is the best tasting almond/coconut brand but also more expensive. Generic is fine as well. That being said, whole (4-5%) or extra rich (5-7%) milk would taste better due to fat content.

Eating the cheese on crackers or something to that effect would be the best way to eat a good serving of it, if you're looking to include more cheese in your diet. However, since you don't like cheese, you should probably put it in something (or on something hot so it melts) so you don't taste it as much.

The ideal is organic 100% grass-fed non-homogenized whole milk. Organic is to avoid pesticides/gmos, grass-fed is the most important quality to look for on any bovine product ("100% grass-fed" > "grass-fed", which is only >50% grass-fed by definition), and the milk should be whole (full-fat) because it's far superior in nutrition and taste than skimmed milk (which is a waste byproduct of the production of cream/butter that was traditionally used to fatten up hogs or water plants). No wonder you hate milk if you grew up on 2%, that shit is garbage. It should be non-homogenized too, which means it hasn't been blasted through tiny holes to break up the fat globules so you don't have to shake it.

Used to be a dairy supervisor for Sprouts for about two years, so eggs/milk/fermented products are my specialty. When it comes to livestock, the organic label is worthless. Organic milk tastes the same (or worse) than its generic counterparts. With "100% Grass-Fed", the cows typically graze whenever possible and are fed hay or something similar during the winter. Other than grass and hay, which are both appropriate foods for cattle, they're usually fed GMO soy/corn like most livestock because those feeds are very cheap and efficient for fattening the animal up. The extreme end of this is factory farming, where the cows have no room to move and are fed copious amounts of soy, which leaves estrogen in the meat/milk. That's part of why you want grass-fed, the other reason is because grass-fed bovine products are superior in taste and nutrition, since grass is replete with nutrients and is the natural food of cattle. They are ruminants, they graze and their stomaches digest the grass taking the good stuff out of it and shitting out the rest. They are basically machines that turn grass into milk and meat. When cows are fed nothing but grains, they become ill and often require antibiotics which also poison the milk/meat.

Raw milk is alright as long as you're a healthy adult and don't drink.more than 16-20oz per day. The issue is people get a gallon of the shit, and make themselves/their kids drink a fuck ton of it because it's expensive and goes bad quickly due to being raw.

The two things that people have disagreed with me on are:

a) the value of organic certification- they probably know more than I do when they say that it's not worth paying extra for, but an organic product is still potentially cleaner than a non-organic one.. on certain things like pineapples, you should definitely get organic because pineapples grown in latin america are often totally drenched in pesticides and I don't think they could be sold as organic after that

b) RAW milk. It is a fact that raw milk is healthier for you, and most people prefer the taste, but there is an inherent risk of food-borne illness. Similar to raw chicken, raw pork, etc. The 'healthy adult' guideline (>>124727) is a good one; just research raw milk if you're going that route so you won't get yourself or anyone else sick. I think the paranoia about RAW milk is excessive, and the dairy industry sure likes it because they pasteurize all of their products (which they have to because grain-fed factory milk would probably kill you if you drank it raw, unlike your neighborhood Farmer Joe's grass-fed Bertha's raw milk).

I'm serious about that running pic though. I've switched to running like that and I've been able to sprint every single goddamn day for the past month, before then I was taking two weeks hiatuses because of knee pain after two days of running, and I couldn't do squats or shit. It might feel silly at first but you'll get used to pretty quick as you'll quickly learn that the impact is all being put into your calve muscles instead of your knees. And I don't have to tell you you can swim to get your cardio in. But if it's aesthetic leg work your looking for you can always try stationary shit or something, there are always alternatives to everything, even alternatives.

Do consider the knee wrap stuff though. They're like no more than 20$. We could use some knowledge about that stuff around here. And has anyone mentioned or asked what kind of shoes you wear when you do your workouts? And make sure that when you're doing your squats you're lifting with your heels, not the balls of your feet and toes. And I'm not going to tell you to go looking up workouts for when you're at your desk, but you can try doing stretches to keep everything limber. I doubt your current sitting style is doing that much damage if it's actually comfortable. If it were having any drastic effects on you, you would probably notice it. And I don't have to tell you to consider seeing a physician, but a fitness coach, especially a student in fitness and exercise at a local college, or one you can find on a forum, might be able to give you better advice.

I did state in a previous post I have several braces. I can elaborate and say that they range from full on fucking metal supports and hinges to a simple, firm sock that fits over the length of the kneecap. If there is more benefit to using a wrap, though, I will take it into more consideration.

Thank you for the tip on the squats. I tried the third world squats suggested earlier, and I nearly fell on my ass a couple times. Once I achieved balance, though, it felt great. Worked the muscle around my knees well.

I think I'm basically saying that I jog more so than I run, as there is a difference.

Here is some source material for the thread.

These are my braces, purchased throughout the years at need (mostly when I lose one, or forget to bring one for a vacation). My favorite is the top left Ace brace, as it offers the most support:discomfort ratio. I had a second one somewhere, but I've since lost it. I wore the one with the metal supports when my knee stopped swelling enough for me to wear it, and I wear the upper middle brace when a knee's pain gets really bad.

Here is also an example of how I sit (on the floor I sit on my foot, in a chair I tuck my foot under my thigh). While it is comfortable, I fear I am doing unnoticeable damage to my knees. Today I did make it an effort to not sit like this, and it feels like quitting a habit what with catching myself unconsciously shifting my position into this posture.

I typically jog 2-4 miles on my jogs. I jog/sprint heavy (get faster as the run goes on) for a minute then speed walk for 2-3 minutes in intervals.

Stop running for a few months. Strengthen the muscles that support your knee. Get strong hips. Find something that you can squeeze between your knees, and then do wall squats, and leg raises. Move on to something that is harder to squeeze as time goes on. Get your minerals. Make sure you are flexible in the right places, and not too flexible in places you shouldn't be. Some people spend way too much time doing hamstring stretches when the problem is coming from a weak core, a "loose" hamstring is bad for your knees. Correct the muscular imbalances in your legs if you have them.

You're lifting something that's maybe more than 100lbs off the ground hopefully using your legs. I would think that there would be some strain on the knees, and if you are prone to knee pain already it wouldn't be that hard to assume that exercise would be bad for your knees, especially if you are not experienced with free weights.

Here's how I'm incorporating the provolone. Slice a vine tomato, couple leaves of red lettuce, two (thick) slices of cheese, three (thin) slices of turkey breast, thin layer of mayo, slightly more generous layer of mustard (stone ground), and two slices of whole wheat sour dough.

Mainly just eye candy for the thread, but as stated before feel free to shit on my taste. Eating a slice of the cheese by itself, I still find the flavor awful. But I've had this sandwich three times so far with no issues.

I also bought some almond milk, and it's stated on the carton that it has ~10% more calcium than milk. Never thought it had that much.
