Two years ago I diagnosed with Ankylosing spondylitis, the world's least spellable type of Arthritis. My doctor said that the best thing for me was take my meds and to stay in shape and flexible as much as I could. So ever since then I've been doing cardio 3 - 5 times a week,(jump rope, jogging, agility exersises) and every thing was good.

Fast forward to this past January and my doctor says my annual check up showed signs of nerve damage in my lower lumbar and damage in my knees, so I've been forced to swear off all the exercise routines I know how to do that focus on weight loss and flexibility. I just though "fuck it, I'm in good enough shape, I'm not gonna get that much bigger", fast forward to two weeks ago and I had gained 30 fucking pounds.

Ever since, I've been getting on the ellipical and stationary bike at my apartmentment complex at least every day (and almost every day) and doing stretches beforehand and some light weight lifting after, but I feel like there has to be a better way to do this.

What I really want to do is get back into martial arts, but I really don't have the time since I'm working full time and going back to school for a second degree. My complex has a pool too, but it's really too small to do much excersise in.

So /fit/, any tips to get back in shape on fucking hard mode? I'm looking for good cardio exercises that won't make my shitty bones turn to dust, preferably ones that work out a wider range of muscle groups so I don't look fucking asymmetrical?

Also, medical hard mode thread.

There's a guy in my town who had serious brain cancer and survived, he was pretty messed up at first and to this day cannot drive a car. So he would ride his bike to work, then to the gym, work out, and ride it home. Every day. And then he also started running 5k's and 10k's. Now he's a huge beast of a man and a decent hobbyist when it comes to running. He still can't talk perfectly but his life is in order and he's still married. A year ago his tumor came back, but he survived that one too. I've run some races alongside him, he's a really cool guy. Ganbatte, OP!

im assuming swimming is ok for you to do despite having the small pool. buy a swimming bungee cord (or a resistance band, whatever they are called) and go hard at it

Can you swim? Do pushups and pull ups? Honestly I wouldn't do any martial art where you are actually in contact or throwing people, something striking based like karate might be best so you don't fuck up your back more by rolling on the ground or throwing people.

easy, from your post it doesn't seem like you're unhealthy really,

first thing is figure out why you got that nerve damage, but don't those muscle turn no mush either, its worse if you don't exercise at all

second and most importantly

FUCKING NUTRITION

it seems like you stopped doing some of heavy exercises, and thus you drop your energy expenditure, of course you gonna gain fat that way,

now just fucking keep track better of what you're eating, that's all it takes

I have arthritis, bone degeneration in my lower spine and pelvis, slipped discs, bursitis, you name it, I've got it. My nerves kept getting compressed to my legs and I would be literally crippled. Yoga has saved me. I haven't had an incident of nerve compression since starting and my pain is reduced massively. Far more than physio, acupuncture, anti inflammatories and pain killers combined.

When you're in pain you tense up and try to protect the injury but you end up developing muscle in the wrong way and compounding the problem. Yoga helps you release that tension and heal. I know sounds super gay. But my spine was twisted to the side and one hip drawn up and forward. I looked like quasimodo. Less than 6 months later I've almost completley fixed it, with a shitty phone app a few times a week.
