 No.1343>>1344 [Watch Thread][Show All Posts]

I recently heard about this "mumblecore" trend that happened in indie film that i'm not sure if it is still happening.

But anyways, I watched "funny ha ha" and I thought it was a pleasant watch.

What do you guys think about movies like "funny ha ha" type indie films?

I personally love them. They're so slow burning it's great. Computer Chess is another good one

 No.1354

I haven't seen many films in this vein, but I also enjoyed Computer Chess quite a bit. They did a great job of making everything look authentic to the period.

I find most of it unwatchable, late FNW did the same things better.

sorry but who do you mean by FNW?

sorry if that sounds kinda pleb.

mumblecore is the bomb and its similarities to fnw enrich it rather than make it redundant
there's more variety to it than meets the eye and there are a handful of filmmakers with illustrious careers ahead of them

here's my top 25
whole list here: http://letterboxd.com/tsar/list/mumblecore-ranked/

still have much to see

ohhh, im a shithead i thought he was talking about a director.

on a related note would any of you consider this mumblecore

 No.1481>>1500

if there's three things that make for quality cinema it's:
>bad acting
>heavy reliance on dialogue
>banal plots

 No.1500

>>1481
>not overacting
>reliance on dialogue for the purpose of dealing with the characters relationships because people normally interact by talking.
>no plot; character driven

i haven't seen "funny haha" but i like the few that i've seen. i think the term is kind of unfortunate because the films themselves are pretty different and lumping them together only divides reception of the films. for example: people will dismiss joe swanberg's "drinking buddies" because it's mumblecore and they hated "mutual appreciation" but those 2 films are radically different.

>>1464
tsar, i can't believe you watched those tao lin movies… they look fucking unbearable.

no.

Never seen one I liked, I might give this one a watch, but that hole type I always find boring, bad acting, good sound track, and some message that is poorly given.

Trying to remember the last one I saw that was pure shit.

tiny furniture and frances ha are really great, specifically at depiciting the NYC 20-something life.

i loved how finances played a large role in frances ha as well.

i thought this was pretty incredible and it had mumblecore actresses as the leads but i don't know if its considered mumblecore

Just watched In Search Of A Midnight Kiss and it made me really really uncomfortable in a bad way.

There's a scene where the girl gets grossed out after the guy tells this masturbation story of his. She slaps him, walks out, and he proceeds to stalk her and get on the same subway train as her. Just as she's finally leaving, he tries to guilt trip her by saying she should go out with him because he's been depressed these last few months and wants to feel like a man.

Wtf was that all about? I'm a male and even that made me uncomfortable. No means no, he should not have stalked her like that or even insisted after being slapped.

Did anyone else feel that way when watching this movie?

It's a shame, I was enjoying it quite a bit but this whole thing made me drop it. Guess I'll try some of the other movies listed here.

 No.3308>>3316

I'm not too concerned about whether something is "mumblecore" or not. That word has always struck me as having a slight pejorative edge to it. I try to appreciate movies that get billed as that on their own merits rather than what a genre classification would me to believe.

 No.3316

>>3308
this need to categorize probably comes from reviewers, right?

for years i liked to listen to odd vintage records and soundtracks.
when people started calling this "hauntology" it took some of the joy out of my listening.
my odd, amorphous preference became a formal term for people to compose pages of chinstroking text on the internet, ha ha.

Ok so google tells me that mumblecore is

>independent film

>low budget
>amateur actors
>heavy on authentic sounding dialogue
>character driven
>rejects traditional plot structure
>often shot in black and white

So it's Clerks
