I haven't written for pones since the third season finale, which was the last of the show I had watched. Twilight becoming a princess / EQG was the "jump the shark" moment for me, and by that time I had just lost interest. Apparently things are still going more than three years on, which is kind of impressive, but I can't say that I really care enough to watch the rest of the show.
I do miss roleplaying, though. I had done so pretty consistently throughout the first three seasons, usually as canon characters and usually as one of the Mane 6. I played all six of them to varying degrees of frequency, some more than others, but I enjoyed them all for their own individual reasons. Sporadically I had also played the CMC and the extended Apple family, like Mac and Braeburn. I also had a handful of decent original characters - the humble town doctor mare of Appleloosa, an antagonistic and bitchy Wonderbolts flunkie, and a trap paramedic qt(male).
When it came to canon characters I was a pretty big stickler for keeping them as true to themselves as possible - Rarity detesting the idea of anything remotely uncouth, Fluttershy being modest and body-conscious, etc. I was never a fan of edgy character reinterpretations, or "luna but with a 3 foot green cock," and all that business. I played characters in "traditional" pony style, anthro and humanized, depending on partner preference. I didn't often mix them, but I wasn't opposed to the idea. I had a handful of good partners, but they've all since gone.
It might be fun to get back into again, if I could find partners that don't mind my not having kept up with the show.

I don't see a problem with not watching the show. The series hasn't improved since the S3 finale, and it's begun its slow and tired decline into mediocrity from what I've heard. I watched most of S4 and some of S5 and, really, there's no real point. It's just for some silly canon that only autistic spergs care about, and two or three Twilight copypasta characters.

Surprisingly, this is somewhat common. There are more than enough people that don't keep up with the show, for many people it's more about the archetypes and the general basis of the setting, not about getting all of the details right. If you tell someone then they'll understand, but it won't hurt to look up the new characters that have appeared since then.

I usually end up writing 3 or 4 paragraphs for one character, so I don't know how I would deal with multiple. I read an RP where a teenage girl landed herself in Equestria and entered into a lesbian romantic (and later sexual) relationship with Pinkie and then Fluttershy, but she screws other characters (including fillies, yum) on the way in a cameo-style way.

With friends, perhaps.

I have two rules when it comes to naming, although they're both basically the same thing.
The first, if it's something cringe worthy like "Starbloom Fluffytail", some bizarre fantastical furry name, -or- it's a name that sounds like it would fit in MLP. I don't want to smash someone with a name like Fluttershy, or 'Starry Swirl' or something that just doesn't sound natural. It's just a bit too weird for me, personally.
The second rule is more phonetic, but to get into a scene I need to be able to take the other character serious. So if they've got a name like 'Lollipop Dreams' or 'Kentucky', imagine moaning that name out in the middle of sex. While somebody-with-horsedick profiles were straight-up uninteresting bitchbreakers for the most part, these people could be spoken with on a casual basis and it was fine. I could be a channel with them and we could talk of whatever like fully-grown adults with their shit together.
