1. You can actually inherit house from your grandparents or parents after they pass away, so you can get rid of your debts (if you were dumb enough to make any) or just keep the house and you have roof above your head. Then monthly cost depends, like if you are heating with wood, if you have your own well so you don't pay them for estrogen tapwater, etc. But it won't be the cheapest solution. A lot people inherit houses and they either decide to move back in or they just sell it because they already own their own house so they pay with the money mortgage. Wouldn't recommend anything else, this is perfect balance between relative comfort and living with drug addicts in some shelter.

2. With electronic infrastructure becoming a thing it's harder and harder. For post you can still use PO BOX or something (not sure) - isn't that possible in US as well by the way?. The problem is everything is anyway connected to your ID, that means they can get even your medical history if they really want to. Police is getting more information from social media so as far as online identity goes, it's same as everywhere.
