The northern Alberta wildfires have been out of control for over a week. Most of the area affected is sparsely populated and densely forested, but the number of mandatory evacuees is over 10,000 and may be double that if it remains dry and windy.
Line ups at the gas pumps and grocery stores were in the hundreds when the power went out at High Level, a small town of 4000. Those who didn't have cash had no choice but to leave town with what little they had in their tanks and coolers.
