It's not just with housing. Degree of it depends on where you live but in the EUZone, as you get older, you realize you don't have so many freedoms as you thought you had - freedoms to live where you would like to live even if it's within your possibilities, freedoms to handle your wealth and finances, freedoms in raising children your way, freedoms in getting education you want, freedoms to be employed or unemployed, freedom to refuse to be treated or freedom to die etc. Free world is one big lie, everything is regulated. This is maybe only point I can have common with libertarians/ancaps but they focus on economy while my issues are related mostly to society/life.

I don't know how it is in Yankee land, but I just went ahead and did it. (Its better to ask for forgiveness than permission type situation). 3 years later, one property reassessment and a slight tax increase later and now I have 3 bedroom 1800sq.ft. house. If I could do it again I'd make it smaller and less obvious.

If you want to rely on the grid for power and gas then it won't work out. That's why I went solar and wood/propane. Everyone out here hauls their own water or own a well/ dugout and pumps out their own sewage.
