An obvious first choice would be NHK ni Youkoso

watched it shortly after finishing high school, it was uncomfortably relatable with a pretty bittersweet ending. I can't say things are much better now than they were then but it's always at the back of my mind.

I strongly recommend you watch it if you haven't already

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is also a great pick up - it's spans a couple of seasons and is by studio Shaft (monogatari series + madoka)

It's really beautifully animated and stylish, makes a lot of social commentary jokes often hitting it pretty close.

The main character is "Zetsubou-sensei" whose name means 'despair', he's suicidal teacher who is often put into despair because of the world around him

I am a Hero isn't an anime but a manga, although probably my favourite. It's sorta a more realistic take on a zombie apocalypse.

Main character is a manga artist assistant working long hours for shit pay. When the apocalypse comes around, he becomes desirable for having a gun license - with Japan having mad strict gun laws this is fairly uncommon.

The manga has a huge section pretty much built around 2ch and I loved how they incorporated it.

Art style is fantastic too. I recommend/10

Onani Master Kurosawa is another manga but I remember enjoying it a lot. It's mostly about a pretty jaded serial fapper who faps in the bathrooms at school but you'll have to take my word for it that it's a good read

Aku no Hana is an interesting one - the anime finishes only part way through the manga but wasn't popular enough to receive funding for a second season. Regardless, the rotoscoping style definitely stands out a lot and although controversial I think it's pretty pleasing to watch.

Story follows an introverted highschool kid who takes home his crush's gym clothes, getting caught in the act he is forced to contract with the creepy Nakamura who insists he's a pervert.

I recommend watching the anime then reading the manga.

Kokou no Hito is another manga close to my heart - it follows the story of Mori, an introverted boy who finds passion in mountain climbing. He just seeks solidarity which is how he becomes so close with climbing. His dream is to climb a mountain that hasn't been climbed before.

Really really pretty art, sad themes but somehow manages to be pretty inspiring.

Freesia:

It's rather edgy, with lots of sex and violence. The protagonist is essentially a mentally unstable doomer, and I found the manga a painful read (in a good way?) at times because of his incompetence in life's mundane affairs.

Darker than Black's Hei is quite a /doomer/ especially in the "ryuusei no gemini" part although the anime is a shounen so the theme doesn't really fit that well.

Well Kaiji ofc, but it's not strictly doomer. I guess NHK isn't either, I can't say much anime really is /doomer/. Maybe more manga is or maybe I am watching the wrong anime. I want to say stuff like gungrave or pic related but that really isn't quite it either. I will keep an eye out I guess.

On topic, I really have been enjoying the gundams recently. Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny are the best so far for me (one of the characters in destiny pisses me off to no end though). One of the best parts is there are so many episodes so it's totally mindless, drink a bunch of whiskey, go to bed and turn on some animu.
