Besides the wall of text, it's still shit.
Everything needs retarded ingredients and it never states what amounts of the ingredient are necessary.
The worst sin is that the ingredients and lore/flavor-text/fluff are written before the effects, wasting the player's time reading the whole thing or looking for where it is. The spells are supposed to be what's interesting.

Why mock you when we could mock this piece of shit instead? I don't even care that it's long, needlessly wordy and lacks pictures, there's simply no motivation whatsoever to actually play it. The worst part is people actually defend this garbage as if it were somehow new and interesting when the only innovation seems to come from a list of things not to do in a CYOA. They don't actually play it though, because no matter how contrarian you are it doesn't make the thing not trash.

I'll copypaste what i wrote once in 4/tg/, i think i've only seen like two builds there apart from my own, even them i got called an edgelord, which is understandable but i stand by my decision, it's a setting so i don't see anything bad with taking the fucked up options it gives you, you are supposed to be someone interested in the dark arts.
Corruptions: Wild Silence, Bloodstains, Snarls, Chill Skin.
Books: A twin treatise on the pillars of infernal magic (two columns of second tier turn into first tier), a fascicle of collected knowledge (first tier magics in half the time)
My very first objective will be to establish myself economically (Merchant's Welcome), protect myself (Amulet against poison, Witch finder, Hound of hell, Skin of the stillborn, rabía de sangre) in order to reach my true objective, which is Devil's fornication, to achieve immortality. Learning all of this shit will take me around 74 years if my calculations are correct, hopefully my plan for reaching immortality works, and at that point i guess my main objective before attempting to learn the rest of the rituals will be to learn magic that will make my life comfier (Fox ward, Plague ward, Glamour, Lunar Bracelet and Solar bracelet). In order to kidnap the children and the firstborn nobles i will depend almost entirely on the hell hound (i suppose i could order it to kidnap any children it sees and bring them back to me) and in Glamour, which i hope keeps its facade as i steal a baby while disguised as a mother. The children are for Veren Kulta and Devil's Appraisal btw.
The pacts i'll take for the three rituals I chose that require it will be: Annual offering, Discord and Blasphemy.
Even then i don't know if this build is fully correct, the author was very vague in the rules.

Okay. I read this a while ago. Or at least most of it. Will posit my opinions on this as I have already done elsewhere.
The amount of research that went into wall of information is astounding. You need to harbor a specific kind of taste to appreciate this for what it is. It's highly unorthodox, you can't even make a build for it without fanfictioning your own future. It practically demands you to have a certain kind of imagination, one more grounded and pertaining to real life. You can't afford to be an idiot here.
The "cyoa" itself is clearly based on folk magics and the occult. The ingredients and components for some of these rituals are highly accurate and aesthetic for this reason. Flying ointments were a real thing, and documented recipes called for the fat of babes and children. Some of these rituals bring up actual historical texts and individuals and real world locations. It feels very genuine and authentic, really getting across how simple-minded folk in medieval times actually went about practicing magic, and secret societies doing sketchy things behind closed doors. The variety in the spells is immense, as they're all culturally and ethnically distinct from each other. Some spells are clearly hedge magic, while others are clearly the trade of the educated. The detailed descriptions just adds to this authenticity. Perhaps a bit too much. Some of the spells are also, as the "cyoa" itself admits, rather useless in modern times. This just enforces the theme that magic is rare and dying.
All in all, this isn't for the faint of heart. You need to be of a certain mind to even consider some of these things. Most of the spells don't require sick ingredients, but some do. It's probably the best, realistic magic "cyoa" in the 'magic has a cost and is dangerous' sense, akin to Game of Thrones, or the typical Sword & Sorcery, Solomon Kane, etc.
Fun read. But I can't really make a build for it beyond mentally envisioning it, which is enjoyable for me on its own.

The difference is that in the first case you can just borrow someone's hankie (or use your own, whatever), and in the second one you'll have to waste a lot of effort gathering the ingredient if you manage it at all (not to mention that everyone and their mother will be talking how much of a freak you are by the end of it)

But, I really enjoyed reading it. A lot. Magic realism is hard to do properly. It doesn't skim on the detail, and some details are absolutely nasty and horrifying. Cutting open infants for their hearts? Eesh. Raping and sacrificing virgins? I'm surprised this hasn't been flogged by tumblr yet.

It's an interactive story or a set of tools for you to make a story, written aid is more useful than some pictures if the author is going to be so specific about how every spell works, though I can understand the preference for photos, I like some CYOAs only because of the great art choices.

You guys are missing the whole point. Images are required to turn it from a wall of text into something readable (remember, players are supposed to have fun, as opposed to feeling like they're doing taxes). Also, illustrating the spell makes it easier to remember and find later, as well as allows you to skim through the list quickly before you decide if there's anything worth reading in it in the first place.
…Oh, and resorting to "images only" or "text only" is unimaginative as hell. Just so you know.

I still don't think it needs images, CYOAs don't have a specific way to be made, if people don't feel like reading, an image in every single spell won't change their mind, and making a text only CYOA it's not "unimaginative", the text has more effort than it takes to find shitty images to appease people that can't find paper and pencil to write down the spells that they like instead of going with the pic that catched their attention more.

The picture is supposed to show the effect of the spell (as it's the whole point of casting it), not the ritual itself, you moron. Although if you plaster a big RAPE AND MURDER sign on the rituals that require those, it would save anyone who's not a complete sociopath the effort of reading that "comprehensive and detailed" content (and I suppose it would also let those who are find their fap meal more easily, so more win for you).
>There's a good investment in historical hocus pocus and realistic grit
And no one gives a damn. The only thing these descriptions would do is convince the reader he doesn't really want to do these rituals (and potentially this CYOA as well). Crazy occult fanatics usually seek their fix in the actual fiction, where all these thorough descriptions belong in the first place.
>>15069
First. Saying "not doing X takes more effort than doing X" is retarded by definition. Second. No matter how thick your wall of text is, if you couldn't be bothered to make a proper, consumable CYOA out of it, your effort was clearly nowhere near enough. If you don't know the difference between a visual and a pure textual format, you're better off on a self-publishing website where no one would care about your lack of interest in proper presentation (or at least about the lack of images).

No one. I wanted to post "I found you" but the post took a few minutes to submit. Downloading images is also a struggle.

Not related to the CYOA, but note the name on this from the second pic in the OP; Edward Kelly[sic] – in the Blair Witch films, the name of the witch is Elly Kedward.

Quick update from last thread by the author:
- Compression is a bit less awful. Sorry for that.
- Some grimpoire-specific reshuffling in the fourth column for thematic reasons and thematic reasons only.
- Oracular Consumption has been moved up to second tier, both for its overlooked nature and a certain kind of insight.
- Talisman of Hermanubis has been moved up to third tier and for good reason – Its range has also been expanded adequately to match something otherwise missed.
Choice has been upped to six; formerly five. You have permission to forgo all six choices to double your parcel selection, if you want, but I'm leaving this unsaid
Added
- A note in a bottle.
- A holy censer.
- A few complimentary spells to accentuate certain written works.
- A ritual-slash-relic that I never did manage to throw into the fourth column of black magic proper.
- A mostly safe analysis on levitation

Accidentally posted the outdated version, it's a dead board and I'm at the top but I'll sage anyway!
