What are your guys' thoughts on it? I've convinced my friends all to move to Matrix from Discord, and so far it's been a nice experience. Do you think it'd be well-suited for a /cyber/ group?

It was a schway movie in its day but feels a bit cringy novadays due to all the muh chosen one wanking.
On a serious note, I want to say that e-mail and IRC should be good enough to cover all your communication needs and we don't need any fancy new protocols, but no one wants to my friends just laugh when I tell them to e-mail me.

Fair enough. I used Matrix in particular because we were moving from Discord, and it had decent feature parity, mostly in regards to persistent messaging and file sharing.

Anyone interested in creating a Matrix room for this board?

It's pretty ok for a protocol built on top of http, but it still inherits a lot of the problems from a polling protocol. That said the canonical implementations are well-made and polished-looking, I hope it thrives as a discord alternative.
I'm a little sad that banter.city when down (even though their website is still up). I'd join a /cyber/ matrix room if someone starts one.

Federated protocols are fucking gay and end up promoting walled gardens of shazbotry.

Distributed protocols are:
a) Usability nightmares
b) Actually federated at some level
Given they are usability nightmares, nobody actually wants to use them. "But I don't need normies in my network", you say, but a chat program where the only users are shy asocial nerds and pedos is a dead network.

discord is very bad. Matrix, as life = womb. Renaissance. Rebirth. soon.

But does it have to be that way?
