Early internet adopters, can you explain to us newbies how the internet was back then, the pros and cons to it and was the 'normie-fication' of said technology a beneficial convince or a detriment to it's purpose.

 No.53249

It was slow, expensive and always geared towards normies (AOL).

If you had call wanting it would knock you off line.

Old internet sucked

No graphics

No browser

No privacy because on a few were online and could be watched.

It was bad

Take two days to get a photo the size of a piece of copy paper

Everything was square corners on everything nothing round.

Lot of unnecessary typing to say one word.

Pass a floppy disk to the person next to you. And it would be filled box’s of these to do simple design over the internet

>“Everyone keep passing they should receive it next week.”

Walking in the rain with out a umbrella.

That’s what it was like.

Aggravated

Pretty comfy in the 90s. No neo-liberal thought policing. Kids were also safer online (no porn popups everywhere). It was a great deal less diverse. Much like the West.

I should have added I'm talking 1998-2005. Anything old is just vintage.

>If you had call wanting it would knock you off line.

This only happened to brainlets. Anyone who understood how to use the phone prefixed their number with *70 to disable call waiting. And only casuals used their main line for data. If you where halfway serious you had a dedicated modem line without "advanced calling features" like call waiting. That shit cost extra and was pointless on a modem line.

I highly recommend you watch "BBS The Documentary."

I'd also suggest going on YouTube and looking up old episodes of a TV show called "The Computer Chronicles" if you want a feel for what computing and networking was like from the late 70s through the early 2000s.
