 No.49122>>49123 >>49137 [Watch Thread][Show All Posts]

Hey all, first time here, i had no idea there was a /cyber/ board until an anon on /b/ recommended it in a cyberpunk thread.

Anyway it seems like you guys know a lot as far as cyberpunk goes, so I was hoping if anyone could help me out in finding some movies/tv shows that take place in cyberpunk worlds? I love seeing massive cities & gritty slums filled with tech.

I'm kind of new to it all, I've watched the classics such as Blade Runner, Ghost In The Shell, Total Recall etc, now i'm just looking for lesser known stuff like Automata, Code 46 etc

Hell even anime, I was never really into it until I found my fascination with cyberpunk universes, then movies like Akira drew me in. Any of you guys know some decent cyberpunk anime, or stuff that focuses on tech?

What are some of your faves?

For anime, one that doesn't get tossed around much is Cyber City Oedo 808. It's a set of 3 OVAs with hilariously bad english dubs (the producers went "how do we drive the point home that this is a mature animu for adults? Make the characters swear every 3 seconds!") and solid visuals and soundtrack. It's about 3 convicts trying to get their sentences shortened from 100+ years by working for The Man. It's pretty fun. Opening here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlZakDfseyo

Another classic one, not so punk but very cyber, is Serial Experiments Lain. It's weird as fuck, very esoteric and 2deep4u, but much beloved nevertheless to the point where it got its own cyberpunk-ish imageboard, lainchan (which devolved into extreme faggotry and is now dead). OP here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yO4myLCfN-Y

For lots of general recommendations and /cyber/-related stuff, visit http://jinteki.industries although I've got to do some serious updating one of these days as there are a bunch of dead links and lots of new stuff to be added.

I'll admit I'm not really a fan of older style animation but that opening looks pretty neat, I'm going to watch it

Should I watch it with the original dub and just subtitles?

Holy shit I didn't know Serial Experiments Lain was considered cyberpunk, I watched it a few months ago and I LOVED it. It's really what introduced me to anime since I watched it before Akira, but wow I had no idea it was in that category i guess that's why I liked it so much!!

Nice I'm definitely going to check that out, I'm always looking for /cyber/ related websites, besides the random cyberpunk thread on /b/ I don't really know where else to talk about this stuff

SEL is fuzzy on if it's actually cyberpunk, but is important enough to the general cyberpunk *chan community that everyone watches it.

Yeah, CCO808 is old, but it works well enough. It's like watching a shitty 80s B movie, like Gunhed or something (which I recommend if you like the visuals), and is decidedly cyberpunk. The screens flashing KILL YOU KILL YOU KILL YOU in the first episode were directly ripped off by a recent game called Ruiner.

As for sub vs dub, your call. The dub isn't too bad, and is outright funny at points because they swear so much.

I was in that thread too lol.

If you're into comics you should look into Tokyo Ghost, it's really cool.

Also watch Psyco-Pass since you're looking for anime

And look out for Altered Carbon coming out this year i think it, it's supposed to be set in a massive cyberpunk world.

I know you're specifically asking for movies and TV shows, but there's an extensive list of books and games that you should look into as well. Start with Neuromancer and Deus Ex.

Deus Ex was actually the first cyberpunk game I played when i first got into the whole thing a few months ago, it's a huge part of how my obsession with anything cyberpunk began.

An anon in a cyberpunk thread om on /b/ a while ago recommended I play DXHR so my first Deus Ex was Human Revolution lol, I had no idea there were 2 before it. Anyway i went on to play 1&2 after I beat DXHR a few times and I know it gets a lot of shit but I truly love that game. The story could have been done a whole lot better (in comparison to the first one) but fuck do I love the visuals, just simply walking around Lower & Upper Hengsha and Detroit is one of my favorite things to do when I play that game. The view on the rooftop is killer (pic related), the Alice Garden pods are incredibly fucking cool as well. I know in the game that people who live in the pods don't exactly like living there, but man that's a really neat concept.

But outside Deus Ex i haven't really played any other games like it, any recommendations

Also forgot to mention Remember Me, I really really love the visuals in that game. Neo Paris is one of the sickest cities as far as games I've played, it has a pretty cool concept with the whole memory thing. The only downside to the game is you're limited to the mission area, so you can't really explore the city as you'd like to. Every area is filled with tech though so it's definitely not bad.

Besides that, Neo Paris has amazing sights to offer from the tech filled slums to parts of the city iself. My favorite place is The Leaking Brain (first pic) it's a bar built on top of a boat located in Neo Paris Slum 404 that's surrounded by houses and shacks. It caters mostly to Memory Junkies and the citizens of Deep Paris, civilian drones usually hum about cleaning and doing random tasks

You chose well. Deus Ex is the best example of cyberpunk, not just in gaming, but in the genre in general.

I just started watching Humans. It's not really normal cyberpunk as it's not really gritty but it's about AI and the singularity. It's pretty good so far.

The more I get into the genre the more I see that's definitely true, or at least so far, Deus Ex truly is an amazing universe.

Does anyone have a link to watch Altered Carbon? I had no idea it came out already, I don't have Netflix though

expecting cool visuals, let's see how they deal with the story though

I am still on episode 2 but for what I have seen, the visuals are very tryhard (a lot of architecture tech doesn't make sense). The characters and the story on the other hand are well thought out.

The franchise is currently made by developers on Montreal, which is lucky because French Canadian culture is very self assured, so they're willing to go to greater lengths based on their beliefs than if it were an American team. What I mean is, we're lucky its in the hands of people who so love their own farts, because it makes them unafraid to go out on a limb with visuals/narratives. For example the "piss filter" that people made fun of. I personally like it, and I applaud them for doing something bold. And now every game is using color grading/tuning.

Anyway, came here to post about Altered Carbon, its only two minutes in and already look at the visuals. They are telegraphing pretty hard that they aspire to be basically the very thing /cyber/ wants

I can confirm basically everything this guy said. I actually like the visuals but they are straight out of, well, every cyberpunk movie ever.

The thing that sets it apart for me is that it isn't just another season-arc melodrama. It lives in a very clichéd world but the characters seem like real people, and not just sockpuppets who exist to advance the plot.

Tried it. Turned it off after 20 minutes. I do that. Love cyberpunk, didn't gel with the TV version of the story.

Read the book, quite liked it. Attempted another novel in the series, it was a bit try-hard didn't like it either.

I was wondering if it was based on a book. Too much background to have originated from TV.

I can respect not liking it. I'm a sucker for film noir and Phillip Marlowe and all that crap, so if you're not it's probably hard to find redeeming features in it. It's expertly pushing buttons you don't have.
