Where to go to keep updated on the latest tech, and the evolution of our world into one out of a cyber novel?
Searching for these things just leads to masses of uninformed, click-bait garbage. But I know their are gems hiding around the net somewhere…

For tech news I use linkedin, just mass follow companies and topics, get a pretty interesting feed.

HN is utter shit, gas yourself.
OP, the only tech news site I visit is theregister.co.uk - they've been around for a while, pissed off Apple to the point of being blacklisted, have wonderful snark, publish the current BOFH series, and are just generally good overall. A little too political at times, but still good nevertheless.

Hacker news isn't that bad. It covers the news and the non-tech stuff is sometimes interesting. The register is ok but it's a little too "look at these stupid normies."

HN is "look at me for using this obscure js framework for my hipster cancercode, also agile is like so 2017, dae le kubernetes xd" mixed in with reddit-grade tech "news".
Also there's literally nothing wrong with being a tech publication for the tech-savvy. Appealing to normalfags is part of what killed other major publications, just look at the difference between Wired in the 90s and [CURRENT YEAR]

Hacker news has plenty of bullshit, but it isn't all bullshit, and important stuff does go up there. I ignore the "Introducing x.js" and the VC-related posts, and it works out ok for me.
There's nothing wrong with expecting a technically proficient audience, but being a smug dick is not the same thing. Look at the dried-up old farts on slashdot. Read the comments and you'll see the competent people left a long time ago. The site is basically a Dunning-Kruger support group. And the register has that same feel: right now there are multiple clipart images on their front page with people covering their faces, like the subject they're covering is just so stupid they can't bear it. I have no time for that shit. You want to look smart, say something original instead of looking down your nose at Intel or the EU or whoever else is pissing you off.
Anyway, do whatever makes you happy. I just used to feel the same way about HN that you do now, but I've found the occasional post that's useful (or not, but interesting).

>Spectre isn't bad enough to warrant a facepalm stock image
ok.
>You want to look smart, say something original instead of looking down your nose at Intel or the EU or whoever else is pissing you off
They were one of the first sites, possibly THE first, to announce Spectre/Meltdown. And I don't read news sites because I want to read something trying to look smart - I want to read news, and if there's some snark towards people that deserve it, excellent. IT is a meritocracy, or at least should be, and when a company fucks up that badly, they should be roundly mocked and put down.
It's simple - HN is reddit for Silicon Valley soyboy "devs", El Reg is a news source for hardened industry admins - you know, those "dried-up farts" that are making 6 figures. The content in both reflects the target audience.

you getting paid by Intel to be here or what? they fucked up big time and deserve the reaction they're getting.
there's also plenty of evidence to suggest they were aware of the issue before it hit the news - Intel execs were dumping stocks like mad last year.

For dumping stock they should go to jail. But for not finding a bug that's been present since 1995? It did take the entire security community 20 years to find it, so no, I'm not going to blame Intel for that.
Anyway, you're missing the point. This guy shows up and tells someone to gas himself for going to a website that's not on this random dipshit's personal list of approved locations. What a fucking gem. What a guy. So since people can change I suggested he broaden his horizons, up until he made it clear he was just here to argue with people, which I will admit should have been obvious from the outset. And now you figure Intel is paying me to come and start flamewars on a forum with maybe 50 people on it. Ok champ. You got me. I get 6 cents and a pack of Juicy Fruit every time I mention Intel. Intel Intel Intel Intel Intel

My tech RSS subscription list consists of:
- EFF
- n-gate
- n-o-d-e
- nichegamer
- techdirt
- torrentfreak
I found most of them from a thread about RSS here which is now 404'ed, and outside of EFF I can't really recommend any of them.
I don't like EFF that much either, but at least they're here on front lines doing something.
I also watch Linus and Lunduke on Youtube, no glowing recommendations from me for them either.
Most of the tech news is bullshit either way.
