Does cyberpunk have to be dystopian or can it be antiutopian?

I've recently heard people claiming that Psycho-Pass is not cyberpunk, because the society in it isn't actually dystopian.

I believe the word you're looking for is Post-Cyberpunk, like Ghost in the Shell.

nigga what?

No, not really. Antiutopia is a society that seems like a utopia on the surface but actually usually turns that it controls the minds of its subjects somehow or manipulates them. Kind of like Orwell or Huxley where most people will be actually happy to some degree but when the characters are confronted with information about what life could be they see how it really is. On the other hand dystopia is just one a society has degenerated, the governement is week, corporations gain too much power, people are dying on the streets etc.

AFAICT, antiutopian is a proper subset of dystopian.

Meh. The second season was weaker than the first.

Every time I see a Maxim 9 I remember the first season.

IMHO Psycho-PASS was pretty good. Maybe not classic. Maybe formulaic. But watchable.

If you idealize cyberpunk, you end up saying every piece of fiction that tries to be cyberpunk is crap, except for some small sacred list - probably starting and ending with Neuromancer.

Or you could just go reductionist and say all fiction is crap.

for the most part psycho-pass hits alot of points towards it being cyber punk but its missing a heavy dose of

low life

that and the music score was a heaping pile of trash that did not fit AT ALL with the show

i watched only the first season and hated it by the end

lain, gits and bubblegum crisis 2040 are the anime that id say without a doubt being cyberpunk

it has nothing to do with cyberpunk, psychoshit is just shit as a standalone work, as a cyberpunk work, as everything really, it's just terrible.

In what world would GitS be considered dystopian? I think it's a pretty clear example of a post-cyberpunk work (which isn't a bad thing).

It took a bit to get going, but I think the first season was great. The last episodes were fantastic and that ending sequence was art. Season two was fun but not as good as the first.

I would argue it is a cyberpunk fiction though. It's a "utopian" society, but it's held together only by convicts who can commit to doing the dirty work. Plus, the AI holding together society is actually a bunch of sociopathic human brains networked together. I think that's enough "edge" to qualify for the "low-life" requirement.

The one of people who actually watched it.

>crime everywhere

>corruption rampant

>human rights thrown out the window

>corporations more powerful then nations

>environmental devastation

>massive wealth gap

>whole setting post nuclear world war

Still, the question wasn't whether it's shit or not, just whether it's cyberpunk and it is. It's also one of the better cyberpunk anime works, when you consider how much of the genre is really, really bad. I mean not every show is Ghost in the Shell or Lain, the majority of it is stuff like Genocyber.

After watching SAC, it doesn't seem as if GitS is dystopian, just a less-desirable reality. GitS 1996 seemed more leaning on the dystopian side, but really only because it had a set piece that was dirtier. And even then, it's more like Detroit or maybe Flint, not close to dystopian. That being said, cyberpunk does not have to be in a dystopian setting at all. Hell, that would make DADoES the first cyberpunk novel.
