I'm suspecting that the new "revive" of the cyberpunk movement is in fact tied to a very insidious propaganda.
The goal of this propaganda is to first mix reality and fiction to be able to associate feelings with a possible future reality (like what is done in every holywood movie). The theme of the pure domination from plutocracy is very important, and the propaganda led it into a evolutionist vision of the world. I mean that if the richest people of the earth have built a very powerful system of dominance, it's because it's somehow in the human inner nature. They are discharging them.
The second goal of the propaganda is about consumption. Making the "younger generation" alright with the presence of robot, prosthetic, computer and massive surveillance in their every day life, in every aspect of their life. The material is now a true entity, not just tools anymore. Your own phone, your companion is telling hello to you each morning. The materialism is at his highest. There are of course a lot of nowdays new company selling totally useless stuff tied to cyberpunk, but the important part is not there.
It's about human augmentation. And I think that you really, but REALLY need to consider all of the implication of what human augmentation means.
Human augmentation is a pure humanistic ideology which exist since centuries. The first ideology was about an imperfect human made by an imperfect god. Here, the human have to enhance himself to achieve its true self, the true enlightenment, immortality (not only). This first ideology was of course an ideology against god. I'm not here to say if the true anti-god essence remain in the nowdays version of this ideology (it's your job), but this is where we are. The pro-transumanist propaganda is going stronger and stronger, promising enlightenment to every one.
I personally that this transhumanist ideology, if anyhow achievable, would only benefit to the plutocrat. Saying that the little servant for the supreme financial and corporative system would be allowed to access such a thing as immortality is absurd. The funny part of it is that people truly believe in this, that someday there could be "given the gift" of immortality. Some people are already debating about considering suicide if immortality is achieved! But these people can't see that they are only the Gamma, that there are stolen from the alpha and beta and that their "high" living condition is only possible because Delta and Epsilon are even bigger servants of the plutocracy!
Some very intelligence people with nearly infinite resources are playing at god. That's the whole story. Because I'm pretty sure that these people are actually the one who believe the most in god.
Anyway, I think that a lot of people down there are truly feeling that something is wrong. The world don't spine right, and it's not just because of a "monstrous inner nature of human" like the whole propaganda is telling us. We are not monsters. But people become monsters. (And you don't have to consider a person because he is a person).
Finally, what is the true cyberpunk. My view of cyberpunk is a rusted view, mixed with pain and fear. A sort of Bolshevik regime with the government replaced by private corporation (at the end, is it not the same?) in a hightech background. But the difference is that where every one knew that the government was evil and not serving them, people now would be the first to defend the system. Some first sight of this obedience is the nowdays extreme consumption and banking complacency. If the people knew, they would take out their brouzouf from the bank and stop consuming. In the future, this massive consumption will be about personal augmentation like replacing the legs for robotics one, or about home-maid robots.
My view of the true resistant of a cyberpunk world is about lean people, always fearing from being busted by the police. The would be permanent homeless, nearly eating from trash. Because these people don't steal. They are not part of the big system. The big system is the personified corruption. These people would run their hacks from old crappy hardware. They would heavily be against any body's modification. Finally, their most precious treasure would be their morals. Incorruptibility. Helping your own. Waiting for an opening.
This is the true cyberpunk.
You are a servant.
You, as a human, is shaped in a way that you must believe in something. The only difference between you and your neighbor is to who you believe in.
