I recently went through a breakup. We were irl friends before we started dating, texting often and hanging out and shopping. You know, normalfag shit. We've hung out a bit after the breakup and while it was okay sometimes other times I've just felt miserable. I'm also dreading when my ex finds a new interest and suddenly I'm a third wheel who gets to help with all of their relationship issues because I'm such a good friend. Is it even possible to salvage anything here or am I just lying to myself so I have someone to talk to until I'm sent to the cuckshed for good?

Don't stay friends with your ex. I can tell you from multiple experiences it doesn't work out. I also think it's just plain rude to any future relationships you may have, honestly. No one would like their bf hanging out with their ex. Would you?

Funny you mention that, while we were still together we wound up hanging out with one of his exes a few times. I was absolutely miserable every time I saw his face and just wanted him to leave, but my partner was all happy so I put on a smile anyway. I can't imagine actually doing that to someone.
