I've traveled a bit all over the state I guess since we've had several road trips out-of-state. Once you go 40 minutes or so easy of Colorado Springs, it starts to get much flatter, past Limon it's just as flat as Kansas (that's why you'll sometimes get tornadoes out there). But there aren't any forests or anything, it's all just grass plains. You can see Pikes peak a good 45-60 miles or so still past Colorado Springs- which is about halfway to Limon. The explorer who discovered Pikes Peak was frustrated because of how long it took him to actually GET to pikes peak from where he first sighted it. It looked deceptively close, but was really a good 120 miles away from where you can first see it.

When you go south of Colorado Springs (which was built on rolling plains) you find taller hills, coupled with increasingly smaller mountains to the west as you get to pueblo. Once you're by Walsenberg, you have smaller rolling hills and plains with more rough overgrowth as it gets drier the closer you get to New Mexico- I think a lot of westerns used to be filmed here.
Going north of Colorado Springs, the landscape is pretty consistent east of the mountains from what I remember- Just more rolling hills and plains. Going west takes you deeper into the Rockies- which is enveloped in forests. I've always wanted to see what it's like as you get closer to Utah. I might have to find some time to check it out later.
Two other things I've always wanted to see but still haven't are the Great Sand Dunes and Mesa Verde.
