How the fuck did this guy manage to become a best-selling art book author?

He has books on everything, and can't do anything.

Has he ever actually made a comic, or does he just tell people how to?

 No.971798

Well you know how the saying goes, those who can't do, teach.

 No.971804

He must have connections in the publishing world, or he works extremely fast and cheap. Maybe both.

In the 90s everyone released a Draw Manga book and they are utter garbage drawn by 14 year olds. I still have one at home. Hilarious to read. Also hilarious: Manga by western female artists which were actually published. It's like someone made a list of anime tropes and put them all in… or they make Teen Titans. Or TNMT. And think shit has to look like Sailor Moon to be Japanese. Cough.

I got some manga drawing guides from Japan, shit is complicated.

I cant find any evidence that he's made comics. He's got a fiction of "step by step" videos on his YouTube account, maybe that's all he does.

That really makes me want to start my own comic, to have more to show and do something more fun for others than a bunch of disconnected sketches. \blogposting

Thanks for reminding me of the whole "Rising Stars of Manga" fiasco where Tokyopop preyed on aspiring comic artist's naivete to swindle them out of all the rights to their creations in exchange for publishing them.

The fact that anime journalists at the time couldn't understand why such a deal would be controversial continues to baffle me.

That's because most of them were anime otaku. Fanboys in general have a poor understanding of the business end of their hobby.

Speaking of Rising Stars, the winner of the first contest managed to get her rights back and is now publishing Devil's Candy online. It's actually one of the better webcomics to come out in recent years.

I actually bought two issues of a German manga, which hasn't continued (I think) because for a western manga it had such a down-to-earth shonen plot (interestingly, written by a girl) and good art that I was able to appreciate it.

It was about some Son Goku esque guy who lives in a swamp and has the ability to turn things into gold. I saw tons of potential in that ability. Sadly, it didn't hook you right away. The number one rule of manga is to throw so much insanity at you in an instant, that you wanna know more.

Kinda like New 52 sometimes did it in really stupid ways, like one issue starting with Bruce Wayne robbing a bank and shooting people (GASP! Is it really him?!), or another issue where Batman and Joker fight together (turns out, it's just a holographic mask, which was stupid AND totally broken, yet they never used it again).

Man, that's a thing for another thread.

I SWEAR TO GOD, I WILL MAKE THEM RUE THE DAY I LEARN TO DRAW THE MANGOS!

And later I realise, It's just western basic how to draw characters with efficient draw techniques.

Either they bought into the "exposure" meme unironically or were just oblivious to how important owning the rights to your own IP is from a creator's standpoint.

Goldfisch? Wasn't that published stateside by Tokyopop recently?

>I recently read with great interest your story, which appeared on MSNBC, called “Corporate scandals uncovered. Where was the press while business was cooking its books?” One of your major points was that typical journalists, while able to cover ubiquitous political scandals, are unfortunately unsophisticated in the ways of corporate manoeuvring and, therefore, tend to keep their distance when trying to report on business news. Most of what they had said about American companies for several years has been “glad tidings.”

(The Web Library: Building a World Class Personal Library with Free

Web Resources, Nicholas G. Tomaiuolo interviewing Richard Hanley)

The comic press is no different. Journalists are generally ill-equipped to report on corruption in private enterprise.

Are you sure they weren't just in on it?

No they weren't in on it. Instead of viewing it as an intellectual property, they instead saw it as selling an article to a publication, or an author signing a publishing contract.

It was incredibly clear that none of them knew about the American comic book industry and how companies retaining rights to a creation could end horribly for the creator.

No doubt countless hackjobs rushed to make a quick buck on the anime/manga boom. Anyone know about some good guides?

There's a solid series by "the Society for the Study of Manga Techniques" i have a pair of books from.

Oh wait, this isn't /a/? Whatever.

Loomis and Vilppu

I owned a couple of those books at some point, not sure where they ended up but theyre essentially just a compilation of tutorial sheets which you can find everywhere else on the interwebs. Pre-interwebs they would have been pretty handy as a TL;DR.
