I'm really trying to get it. The only "superhero" thing I was raised on was the damn Smallville tv show, and some of the movies. I saw the first Superman film, and some of the serials. I wanted to begin reading the books.

Now I look through some of this shit and discover that these people have made the universes of their comics incredibly dense and autisticaly complex. Apparently our superman lives in "Earth 1" and is friends with people in "Earth 2", but there's also a big shift in the entire canon during an event called "Post-Crisis". And now Jor-EL is his own superhero called "Dr Mox".Apparently Superman has died twice?

How the hell could I ever hope to get into the comic book canon when they've made the entire universe the character is in needlessly complex? And for that matter, is him joining the Justice League a part of the main story or is that a side-canon?

Don't worry about the canon, it changes every few years anyway. Just stick to creators, good creators make good stories, and cherry pick the best runs, limited series, graphic novels, one-shots, etc.. If you just dive in to the book based on characters you like you'll be disappointed 90% of the time.

Anyway, for Superman, I'd suggest All Star Superman, and Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow.

>Casual tries to get into capes.

That shit is not for you. It isn't built for you and it doesn't want you. Mainstream cape comics are for autistic neckbeards, hence the needlessly complex canon that goes nowhere.

>All Star Superman, and Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow.

>Superman wank and a Superman deconstruction

What is wrong with you? 90% of DC "acclaimed" work isn't an entry point for anyone and only creates unrealistic standards for the genre.

It's only complex if you take everything that happens in comics for granted.

Obsessing over canon and continuity is pointless because most of the time they're not immediately relevant to most stories. At best they're like bits of contextual trivia to keep in mind when reading certain stories (ie, Superman was more of a plot device than a character in his earlier appearances). Most writers barely touch the older stuff, so it's not like there's a shortage of stories that start from zero. The most you can do as a reader is keep a clear head and manage your expectations for certain stories.

That is a lie.

Since 1986, comics, especially DC comics, have required you to read more and more issues to understand what's going on. To understand what's going on in Superman comics, you have to read Action comics. To understand what's happening in Action comics, you have to read Justice League. To understand all of it, you'd have to been reading DC titles for five months or a year.

Comic companies have embraced decompressed story-telling and cross-title narratives as a way to get fanboys to buy more comics, thus requiring stores to buy more comics. The dense continuity is crafted to keep fanboys buying, but is now becoming a problem now that those fanboys are dying off. The impenetrable continuity has made it difficult for new readers to jump on board.

So, my advice to OP is to stay the fuck away.

The current Superman is currently one from an alternate universe from another continuity who replaced the last one when he got a Poochie-esque death

I think?

They don't even try to make it not stupid

>tfw the only Superman I've read is All-Star and Kingdom Come

>read the first chunk of New 52 Action Comics after that

Thought they were pretty excellent tbh. I started looking Morrison's run on Action Comics once I realized what the fuck was going on. Cape continuity is a shitheap, just ignore it and read whatever you want.

DC and Marvel have been trying to figure this out for decades. You're lucky that Rebirth happened recently, so now would be a good time to start reading from those comics. It's still a bit confusing, but they at least explain what the past events are that they reference to minimize being completely lost.

You wont believe how shocked i was when i fucking finally udnerstood what the goddamn hell are Marvel's Ultimate comics! I tired to jump ship but the mother fucking first ironman blowed into the mainstream and the big two swallowed me and my friends like fucking fishes!

This is a fucking hell! And i'm not even burger to easily get into comics! A little expose to this shitshow was enough to be trapped and up here…
