 No.928216

That was a weird season finale, and the minecraft joke seemed pretty shitty though I chuckled at Rick's autism comment. I especially didn't like the meta-reference to South Park, but I liked how the Beth question(s) turned out.

All in all I liked season 3, felt better than season 2.

I don't know. Season 2 had some really good episodes, like the microverse episode, but it also had Tiny Rick.

Season 2 was the worst, season 3 was mediocre, and I need to rewatch season 1 to decide if it was better or worse than season 3, but that's not gonna happen, so I assume it's about the same.

Overall, this cartoon is shit.

 No.928248

Really strange ending, almost like they didn't know how to end it. Better than throwing Rick in superjail again as a cliffhanger just to see him Rick his way out in the next season like he does in every episode. People are throwing around the idea of there being a Christmas episode in store this year, which would be a totally fitting holiday to contrast Rick's nihilism if that formula hadn't been done to death ten times over. Who knows, maybe it'll be original, creative and an all around decent episode.

faggots like you should hang themselves

for season 2 the good episodes were

>Mortynight Run

>The Ricks Must Be Crazy

and the above average episodes were

>Auto Erotic Assimilation

>Total Rickall

>Big Trouble in Little Sanchez

>Look Who's Purging Now

Season 3 didn't have any great episodes had plenty of good scenes but no episodes that were good overall

Season 1 had a greater number of good episodes overall

>The pilot with the smart plants that got everyone hooked on the show

>Lawnmower Dog

>Meeseeks and Destroy

>Rick Potion #9

but season 1 also had a really shitty one too

>Raising Gazorpazorp cuz feminism

I think its like that IQ distribution chart, the more women they hire the closer the range becomes so we end up with mostly mediocre junk that would not have caught our attention in season 1

The finale was really bad. The crystal concert episode was really bad too. Rest and rickation, atlantis and vindicators were pretty good. I was ok with pickle rick and a lot of the rest for this season, but the finale was such a let down. It was played so safe that it went limp-dick and there were no consequences for rick's actions. It felt like Rick was getting lampooned this season. He went from being an outcast of the ricks to an omnipotent being.

I was surprised that Harmon didn't try to shoehorn Trumf memes into the show. The left are going crazy over him.

at the very least this opens up an "alternate timeline" where Beth chose to leave, I'm willing to bet they'll be an episode with 2 Beths in the next season- she shows up from the alternate universe with the portal gun. I'm not going to write that off yet, it might be a good episode.

It was. There were some pretty good episodes, but some real shitters as well. I still can't believe how bland the ending was either. It was the kind of ending you make when you know you're about to get shitcanned, but you also hope to get work elsewhere at the studio. Season 2 had a much better ending than 3. At least there, you had Rick acting selfless even though he plays it off later on. However, Rick confirms his initial act of compassion when toxic Rick gives up to save toxic Morty later in the season. Rick and relaxation showed that to some, being healthy means being a sociopath. The only part of Rick that had any compassion for his grandson was toxic Rick and healthy Morty was very obvious when it came to how emotionless he was. Healthy Morty had no qualms with hurting Rick or anyone else, by how nonchalant he was in threatening Rick in the parking lot.

>Has it reached the sexual maturity of it's species?

1) Go back to purely sci-fi, non consequential stories (except for maybe a single episode that has a direct, unexpected connection with an earlier one). If you can't just reset the whole R&M universe to have limited universe hopping moments, at least make a plausible explanation a la "the juice used for universe hopping is so low I can't do this every week, Morty".

2) No Aliens or as little Aliens as possible. The scamming ones were pretty great because they came out of left field, everything else was terrible.

3) No drama apart from a couple of episodes centered on Rick and Morty's relationship, kind of like the episode where Morty chooses his own adventure and ends up almost raped. No shock humor either apart from moments when it's least expected (I literally read some pages of the comic book out of boredom and I could point out the specific pages when shit would hit the fan for no reason).

4) Beth, Jerry and Summer go back to being one-dimensional characters, more specifically drunken, smart but obviously flexible mother (remember, she's okay with her son having a sex doll and Jerry's parents cucking each other) , the voice of reason, down to Earth but obviously unfit for this universe father and a comic relief that spoofs on Teen Drama and occasionally has to help Morty.

5) Center it more on actual pseudo science taken to its limits, it's one thing if Rick gives a coherent but obviously impossible scientific explanation about what's going on and it's a much worse one if he just goes "trust me im smrt".

6) For the love of God, tone it down with the goddamned references. No one but reddit finds a Mad Max episode any funny, especially if you specifically call it out like that. Also, an episode where Rick is self aware that it's just a cartoon (instead of a 4th wall breaking joke every once in a while) would be much better.

6) Have Evil Morty being the actual series villain in the finale, but with a realistic backstory that loops around to the pilot episode. Something like "my Rick made me smart thanks to the mega seeds so I've realized the futility of helping him and I just want to stop Rick Sanchez from tainting universes" or some bullshit like that.

You have such a strong reaction against this. I think you like the lizard whore, but are in denial because you hate furries so much.

 No.929241

To be blunt, you must have a pretty low IQ to like Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely up and front in your face about it, you don't need to be theoretical physician chemist to know HOW these cheap jokes work. Rick and his nihilistic outlook is cheaply added to his "character"- and his personal philosophy draws from depressed, angsty, teenagers from tumblr who think they can do whatever they want on their safe space website. The fans are unknowingly confused about what even goes on in this show, they think they know, but really, they don't. Their brain cells must be pretty small to think these shows have "such deep meaning," in them. They aren't funny, and it just shows that life is worse in the real world than in R&M's world. Anyone who dislikes Rick and Morty, you have my grace, as you don't follow mindless idiots thinking "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," is some highly intellegent foreign russian literature or some crap. I'm cringing real hard right now, imagining some fanboy/fangirl pissing themselves over Dan Harmon's "Intellegent writing and jokes" in this show. How sad I feel over them.

Taken from a recent Polygon interview

>“I know there’s toxicity among the fan base because it’s a popular show and people obsess about it,” Harmon said.

>“We try to outdo each season. If it was dumber, it was an accident. Maybe I got dumber! You can’t argue with somebody who says they like this season, but not that season. It’s not the same show season to season.”

>“I think if you’re talking to someone about whether or not something sucks it’s a good indication that they’re not watching TV right,” Harmon said.

>“They’re probably a little swept up and — I’m not saying they’re wrong to be this invested in a show — but I wouldn’t trust that person to tell me what’s funny because they’re kind of scowling already.”

>“Look, I’m one of these guys,” Harmon said. “I grew up shaking my fist at this Star Wars movie over that Star Wars movie … as long as I can keep making this show, hate it all you want.

>I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t trolling a little bit by making sure that a season they had political reasons to hate was one of the best that we did. >Then again, I can’t manipulate the quality of a show season to season. But what I can do is make sure it’s a really good season.”

>Harmon added that he tries to stay out of it, taking prolonged breaks from Twitter or social media and clearing his head. For the most part, he said, people are more than welcoming of the new season and that’s what matters.

>Harmon said he’s proud of the season they completed, reiterating over and over again during the course of our conversation that he thought it was the best one they had made.

>Harmon's narcissism and alcoholism will take the toll on everyone working there

>Harmon and Roiland will grow even more distant

>4th season will underperform

>It will feature even more Drama, references, randomness, and an episode or two that are carbon-copy "homages" to films that were mildly popular year prior to show's release

>5th season will be severely delayed, since Harmon will drive away portion of the crew during production

>Remaining crew will put bare minimum of effort

>They will just want to be done with it to get away from Harmon as soon as possible

>Roiland's involvement will most likely be limited to voice work

>Season 5 will bomb

>Last fumes of Rick and Morty's popularity will wane rapidly

>Harmon will have a meltdown on twitter

>Adult Swim will not make any announcements regarding next season.

Aftermath:

>Roiland will get a cartoon deal from Fox, FX, or Comedy Central

>He will officially part ways with Harmon and leave Rick and Morty

>Show will be officially shelved

>Harmon will give a handful of interviews and will be on few podcasts

>He will talks how tormented he is and that show did bad because of him, but that suffering was also what made the show great in earlier seasons

>He will also peddle "Harmon's Story Circle" which is nothing else but watered down hero's journey

>He will go silent for a bit, and then latch onto another project - probably a Netflix sitcom

 No.929775

The only problem I had wth the show was that Rick was too competent and ahead of everyone else. He destroyed his two biggest enemies in one fell swoop. Although it supports the idea that he's the smartest man ever, it means any future adventure will not have high stakes since Rick will always win. Of course we want the characters to continue to live but this is too predictable. He was more appealing as a crazy grandpa who made gadgets that occasionally backfired instead of a hip nihilist that controls everything. This is why his rant claiming Jerry won was so out of left field, he didn't face any obstacle like that before and lose, why would he give up then? Also Morty's progressive bitterness and disillusionment, although understandable, makes him a lesser foil to contrast Rick.

In summary, the characters need to be more consistent for the stories to work. You can claim Rick keeps his motives unknown on purpose, but in storytelling terms this doesn't work for long.

To be honest, you have to be a pretty average IQ in order to be able to enjoy Rick and Morty.

The humour is somewhat lukewarm, and fairly digestible be it with or without a masters degree in theoretical psychology.

Theres also Rick with his indifferent outlook on the world, being a fairly nondescriptive mixture of the classical understanding of, and the current popculture interpritation of nihilism that is occasionally hit and miss.

Fans and haters alike seem to enjoy crafting often inane and farfetched interpretations of the shows rather mediocre themes and messages.

The shows iconic phrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub" appears to cause both irrationally extatic as well as extatically irate reactions among the shows rather median target demographic, strangely enough. Which in itself raises the question if said demographic, and indeed the shows writers, really had any intimate knowledge of classical russian literature or some such among other things.

Im rather indifferent about the fan's reception of Dan Harmons lukewarm and well treaded tropes, and the ever so slightly amusing, purely functional writing. Such mediocrity, cant say I really feel either way about them.

Alright, to take a serious stab at it while running on 2 hours of sleep?

Some broad strokes:

>Get. The characters. Consistent. They've been inconsistent since season 2. Take this season to get them right. If this can't happen, don't bother with anyone who isn't Rick, Morty or a side character.

>Either way, more focus on R&M adventures. The family sideplots have been milked for all that they're worth; just enjoy the few droplets we get out of them

>Don't play it safe. Show's going to die if you do.

>Most importantly? Downgrade Rick and shift focus from him to Morty for a balance. Rick is not the protagonist: he is the deuteragonist along Morty. Any episode that forgets this is not worth its salt.

>On that note, no big focus on drama except for any between Rick and Morty. If they've nothing to be dramatic over, then don't

>Stop with the fucking references. Szechuan sauce was almost bearable for how obscure it was. But reddit, South Park, Minecraft etc? No, it's time to stop.

As for the five most recurring characters?

Beth:

>Leave in the background

>If she has to have ANY attention at all, why not bring up her freaking abandonment issues? S3E9 was fucking frustrating because it tried to have a Beth/Rick episode that avoided the elephant in the room

>She can get on Morty's back for underperforming and argue with Jerry about what to do with the kids bonus points for freshness if Jerry is right

>Or, y'know, not be caught up in anything.

Jerry:

>Either leave in the background utterly for the occasional yet-another-loser-dad-in-fiction joke

>Or

>Blow everyone's minds and have him mature for the better

>Build jokes where him being responsible and helpful is the punchline (without kicking him down, or else you kill the point of it)

>If we're going to focus on Beth's abandonment issues, then show Jerry as a trustworthy anchor who won't leave her

>Given how rushed the s3 conclusion was, the impetus for this change must be in s4

Summer:

>Only other family character to have relevance

>Have her in at most one adventure

>Stick to her archetype: she is a normal high school girl who only cares about normalfag shit. She. Is not. Morty 2.0. If she gets a moment that could easily go to Morty, scrap and rewrite.

Rick:

>Get him fucking consistent. Most inconsistent character and the show suffers for it

>Downgrade him. He is not a living god. He is not an enlightened redditor. He is a mad tech wizard with questionable motives. Don't buy into the myth about him like season 3 did.

>Either his tech has to be downgraded so he can't just science his way out of fucking all tension, or he himself has to be downgraded (i.e be more slow-witted, less resourceful, less agile.) Season 1 Rick was consistently excellent about this; season 3 Rick was consistently awful and bought into his own hype.

>Be willing to make him more of a dick or a fuck-up. Morty should be his one soft spot, and even then on occasion

>Also for consistency's sake, center him around hedonistic nihilism - or at least, a guy so battered that not even eldritch abominations can phase him.

>More experiments for his own gain (e.g Anatomy park), less aliens.

Morty:

>Has been the only real consistent character, though this has come at the expense of prevalence, which you can't afford for a deuteragonist.

>Just structure more episodes with him in mind. Again, season 1 was best with this. It had times where Morty was punished for his naivete, where he had a spine against Rick, he had his endearingly flawed moments but also his more profound ones ("Nothing exists on purpose, no one belongs anywhere, everyone's going to die, come watch TV").

>If Rick reverts to hedonistic nihilism for comfort, Morty should take the more mature view; nothing matters and that's good. Morty's growth is that nothing matters but he still gives a fuck.

Sample episode ideas if you need to do ANYTHING that isn't regular adventures, because the show has honestly been grand with pretty much every time it's done just those.

>Family finds out Morty has been flubbing even harder in school lately because he's been spending too much time with Rick. This defeats the pilot-established reason for them justifying the adventures, so it prompts more Morty-centric shit. Even if it's just stuff like s1e2 to get Morty an A in math.

>Beth and Jerry go on vacation for Beth's sake for a few episodes/the rest of the season. This lets Summer be the one grounded contrast to Rick & Morty.

If you NEED a continuity element?

>Some element like Phoenixperson or a new character gets their own episode. At the end, they're presumed dead by R&M, but in truth get abducted. In a later season, abductor is revealed to be Evil Morty. Just don't make it obvious at the time, no face reveals or playing For the Damaged - Coda

i doubt it.

Since season one, R&M was adult swim's own attempt at "simpson-ize" one of their shows. Aqua Teen had a good run, but was ultimately too weird and underground to be properly mass produced. Same can be said about many other high-budget shows like Venture Bros., which was just very expensive and took too long have a new season.

R&M fits the bill perfectly. It was built from the ground up to look smart and interesting but not really, so that it doesn't alienate the big audiences, in addition to be cheap as hell to make and feature veteran voice actor who have a little nerd-cred to garner attention.

What I'm saying is: [as] found something that works, and they will use it forever, even after Harmon has a meltdown and committed to madhouse, or Justin leaves or stays under several contractual obligations for fear of litigation it will go on forever with new writers and maybe a new cast, and people won't even notice. They actually did that a couple of times in the first season. You know, when Jerry was a character and not just a punching bag. The impression I get from his character in that first season is someone who's a perfectly capable, kind of old fashioned father and husband, who's left competely out of his depths around Rick's genius and all the sci-fi bullshit he drags into their lives. Remember how the original Jerry actually pulled his shit together as soon as Rick and Morty left their universe?

His character, pushed in the promo commercials and the original episodes, were of a father who is definitely feminine while his wife was masculine or at least more unhinged.

>>930384 made a lot of great points about what's wrong with the series and what should be done. Another thing that got immensely worse from the promos/early first season to later parts was the use of shock humor and the timing of all jokes. See, the thing about shock humor is that it's supposed to snap you out of your comfort zone with horrible shit going on in an otherwise quiet setting, but the humor doesn't come from the carnage itself or its glorification, but from the implication that yes, something horrible is happening and the punchline is just that. Not the act, but the fact that it's gonna happen. So for example, take the joke they made in S2 with those two testicle faced monsters who travel back in time and mistake (((Einstein))) for Rick. The whole "humor" of the joke isn't the fact they mistook him for Rick, it's that they beat up live. That's idiotic. You know how it would have worked much better? If the testicle monsters moved back in time exactly to the point in time Einstein was writing his mass-energy equivalence formula and announced their intentions to shake him up. Cut to black (or at best, let a few punches be heard). Boom, instantly the scene can be considered comedic. Instead they focus on how they beat down this poor old kike and how he Vill Mess Vith Time, which is not funny at all.

Also, on that point, they keep making every character an alien. That also is boring as hell.

That was actually one of the few jokes I found funny simply because it means he wrote the mass-energy equivalence formula out of spite.

Honestly, this pseudo-intellectual show was like nothing I've ever watched. It'a absolute trash that tries so incredibly hard it's endearing. Each episode shows that the directors and writers are creatively bankrupt and yet they continue. Its stellar how such a brain dead show could enjoy such longevity and fandom.

Stuttering, memes, gimmicks, inconsequential narratives and a loose interpretation of comedy don't make for a great show.

I thank god every day that I wasn't born with a small enough number of brain cells to enjoy this content without irony. It constantly challenges the viewer in its simplicity, idiocy and lack of a commitment to a vision. Not in any form of intellectual discourse as its fans seem to believe. It's marinated in cliche, fried in shlock and still tastes raw to any patrician.

If you enjoy this show I must respectfully ask you to reconsider your ability to subjectively assess anything. It's trash.

I have full faith that the type who enjoys this show is a simpleton of the highest order; a low IQ, simplistic mongoloid plebian.

I hope you find peace in death. Seek it soon.

Absolutely, and I miss that Jerry. He got me to smile in the pilot, he cracked me up in the anatomy park and kronenberg episodes. Being fair, I honestly think they got some good mileage out of the Jerry they wanted in the first two seasons, but I think that well has been drained. The best way to take him would be the Jerry as you described. He doesn't need to do a crapton there, he doesn't need to be multidimensional, just that such a character is the perfect foil and grounding for what R&M should focus on being.

>>930723

Also all very true. One of the weakest things about season 3 was that it basically had no grounded moments. Many of the times it came close to this, it flubbed.

>Mad Max felt hard to take seriously when they wanted us to. We didn't see Morty/Summer taking their parents' divorce poorly; we were told they were as they rode the wave of a bizarre premise

>Pickle Rick somewhat had something in the therapy session, though was hamfisted and failed to integrate Rick himself

>Vindicators could have shown Morty's idealism, but the whole episode was handled so callously that it would have been a better surprise had the Vindicators been good guys all along. Episode should have been Rick being a grumpy cynic complaining while Morty tries to enjoy an adventure with heroes played mostly straight.

>The President episode was fucking trash because it painted the government as just as batshit loony as the rest of the show

Again, the detox and citadel episodes are the only two that did this right I think.

>Citadel episode established each different character in their daily routines before they got upended

>Detox episode had detoxed Morty enjoying life in a comparatively grounded way, giving it a big punch when toxic Rick & Morty showed up.

If nothing else, the family being one-dimensional and separate from the sci-fi helps ground them so we want more from the main two. All the more reason to let them be the supportive/outmatched contrast so the adventures can be anything the writers want.

Citadel Episode makes no sense though. Why would Ricks, who by all intents and purposes are all geniuses of their own universes, decide to stay with other Ricks to work jobs they shunned back on Earth? Obviously this may also be a jab at how a Rick, despite being super intelligent, is still just one of many, and as one of many he'll do the job that most fits him. But the reveal was so goddamn moronic as people could've figured it out without the need of the musical cue and the photo, while I still can't get over how retarded it is they put a Legend of Korra cameo among the shadow govt. Which again is also retarded because if the shadow govt existed before and even ordered around the Council, wouldn't they already be in the know of Evil Morty's enhancements? He never takes them off, even in the final reveal photo, so when they were curing him from the laser wound they surely must have figured out that something wasn't right with him.

But whatever, we're putting too much thought in something the writers themselves didn't care about.

>Detox

Only legitimately good episode barring the Transformers robot at the end. Finally an actual Sci-fi adventure.

Rick & Morty have become something like the irreverent wandering comets of the pop culture multiverse, injecting that same disaffected millennial nihilism anywhere accessible via portal gun. What is only a formal heterogeneity of content - visually sumptuous settings, imaginative sci-fi plots, references to an infinite and infinitely bewildering multiverse - is compensated by a homogeneity in tone - Rick will berate, belittle, and shit on you with that same world-weary millennial "wisdom" no matter what universe he's in, and in fact a lot of the humor comes from Rick's mockery and subversion of the tropes of more conventional worlds. I think this represents not so much a crisis of creativity (the plots are a Frankenstein monster of sci-fi tropes, but one with a surprising amount of gristle), but a leveling of the spectacle into the only "condoned" orientation one is allowed to uphold: the frankly flat nihilism of the vaguely depressed, vaguely anxious millennial. Rick & Morty doesn't throw the doors open on an infinite, unlimited universe, it only subsumes the staggering potential of television's first "sandbox" under the the "privileged" perspective of the know-it-all omniscient spectator whose audience surrogate is Rick. You only need to watch Rick helping himself to Simpsons' kitchen during the crossover couch cag to get what I'm talking about: one era has ended, another has begun. Watching Rick try Duff beer and then top it off with his preferred brand of liquor illustrates this perfectly: the outmoded humor of the 90s is altogether too weak, we need something "stronger", what was only a twinge back then, easily remedied by the solidarity of familial love and bonding, has become a full-on chronic nihilism, a relentless consumption of worlds, an endless fascination with what Baudrillard called our "witnessing our disappearance". Underneath the jaded millennial humor, however, still beats a wounded heart. Can anything save us?

I'd make the Citadel like Commorragh from 40k, with every Rick trying to prove that they are the Rickest of the them all, with Mory's being caught in the crossfire.

>He does realize that they're the ones that own the idea of the sauce, right?

I don't think either Dan or McD on the concept of Szechusn sauce.

McDonalds doesn't own the concept of Szechuan food, but they do own the concept of Szechuan sauce.

Because there wasn't such a thing as Szechuan sauce until McDonalds made the Mulan sauce, which is actually teriyaki sauce

This show should have ended in Season 1.

>Rick and Morty kill the world then flee to another one

>Jerry mans up and Beth admits her father is trash

>No overused Summer

>No Rick the Mary Sue WWigger

 No.945691

I'm now wondering what the show would be like if they made it so that Rick always abandoned his family at the end.

>Just flees Mutant Earth with Morty getting eaten or going feral

>Just flees Alien Earth with the rest of the family gettig tortured or living on it.

And so on.

And Don't forget to bring a Towel!

>South Park was making fun of this sort of shit 16 fucking years ago. Only for people to eat it up like slop again.

I was referring that the show is just an one hit wonder until they came out with bullshit plots since 2nd season.

But it doesn't matter since it's a smart show.

>stop doing fourth wall breaks

>culture references should be limited to how the plots of episodes often parody sci fi stuff

>stop writing Rick as "wacky" and forcing catchphrases

>stop writing Rick as some fratboy who doesn't act his age, instead focus on the idea of him being a grumpy abusive loner who drags Morty along because he doesn't have anyone else

>stop making Rick out to be invincible in any tense situation

>write Summer as a typical but likeable teenage girl, don't try to make her out to be a badass

>write Jerry as the hapless straight man who could function fine in a normal lifestyle but struggles with Rick's shit

>all I'm going to say about Beth is don't make her an absolute bitch and don't ever make her rocky relationship with Jerry the focus of an episode

>show is called Rick and Morty, make it about their adventures with other family members occasionally being the third person (basically the Doctor Who formula)

>show is at it's best when it's written around legitimately clever premises, strive for that
