Everyone on /co/ is whining about more or less suble political messages in cartoons, or that cartoons nowadays lack the balls to show darker content. Meanwhile this happens in a cartoon named Afred J. Kwak, which I grew up with:

>Alfred's parents and all of his siblings die in a hit and run by two corrupt businessmen who are distracted while driving, and afaik never caught in the whole series.

>One of Alfred's schoolmates is an obvious gypsy analogy Magpie who keeps stealing stuff, but everyone accepts his apologies (even the judge during a trial), because he's a Magpie, and stealing is what he does. He later looks like a gypsy stereotype.

>Alfred saves the whales by leading a protest with them.

>One of Alfred's friends has an inner conflict, because he has the chance to be the captain of a modern, huge ass fishing ship which is a well paid job, but that ship destroys the ecosystem, which shows that it's not a one-sided topic.

>Alfred hides illegal black duck immigrants at home and uses his influence to get them a visa.

>One of the illegal immigrants had to flee his country because he's a Malcolm X type of character, and in his 3rd world home country there's early 1900s American racism between geese and black ducks for some reason.

>Alfred falls in love with his daughter. She's a constantly jealous bitch.

>One of Alfred's former schoolmates is a white supremacist goose.

>The goose is openly racist against black ducks.

>Alfred's crow bully, named Dolf, tries to get rid of the immigrants by winning (another) election. He later breaks out of jail after an attempted mass murder and takes Alfred's GF hostage.

But the best part:

>Alfred's school bully Dolf the crow is scared to end up being mocked, because he's only a half-blood crow. He paints his beak black since it's yellow to hide it. As a kid, he swears everyone will fear him.

>Both characters have a strange Xavier/ Magneto rivalry.

>Dolf learns in history class about how "different" people were exiled from the village in medival times and loves it.

>Dolf grows up to look like Hitler, his two friends like stereotypical nazi thugs. They try to raise money, because Dolf wants to overthrow the monarchy.

>Dolf becomes the new leader because the king doesn't know anything about politics. He jails everyone who doesn't support him.

>Dolf's friends are actually nice guys, who aren't shown as evil, but they simply idolize Dolf and don't understand what they do wrong.

>Alfred manages to storm his castle with his friends, right at the moment when Dolf was about to start a mouse holocaust, because a mouse failed an "assassination" against him (which revealed his yellow beak).

>in the end, Alfred loses his shit and scares Dolf away with a gun.

In total though, it's actually a great because the characters grow up, get jobs, it gets weirdly political, its kinda deep (Dolf only went to power to impress Alfred in the end). Some conflicts are presented in a way too naive way. Like when he lets the immigrants live in his home and there are neither issues, nor does anyone complain (implying nothing could go wrong).

Hey I actually finished watching this series a few weeks ago, I liked it. It has it's problems mostly as you say how some conflicts are presented in a way simpleminded way, how the show never really addresses some plot points like Alfred never wanting justice for the murder of his parents and his brothers or how the writer sometimes introduces characters to then proceed to do nothing with them, this is specially notable with Alfred's girlfriend she has a little brother that she takes care of but only appears in 3 episodes max and we never see her trying to get accustomed to her new country or the culture in it, most of it is done off camera and she it's mostly there to be a trophy girl for Alfred to have while he fucks off to travel the world with his scientist friend.

Other think that I disliked was how in the later half of the series this loses it's narrative strength, opting to go for 2 parters instead of the 4 that it use to have which made some arcs feel a little rushed specially the last episode that I felt pretty weak to be the end of the series. But I still enjoyed it: the music, the animation and the designs (work of one of the character designers of Who framed Roger Rabbit?) were perfect. Quite sad the the creator died because for what I looked he was planning to do a sequel and a movie about Alfred's son.

Alfred didn't know who killed his parents, he didn't even see the car, that's the tragic thing. But I found that weird too. Maybe they planned it, but it was never finished. I found it especially weird that some eeevil capitalists killed them, who have no point in the show except they are evil because money. That was really weird. Some messages come across as manipulative, while others were handled fine (my personal highlight is the Dolf dictatorship arc, but I doubt kids wouldn't understand how the events could take place IRL).

And as you say, that also troubled me. The black ducks are instantly accepted. That would have been a chance to show them dealing with the culture, or being looked at funny, considering they are literally the only immigrants in the whole town. Besides that, the chick made me hard as a rock as a kid, same with Alfred's mother. Man, porn ruined me fast.

I found many of the filler episodes weak, and I especially skipped the whale rescue arc, since it made me roll my eyes. You can't just go out there and… you know… save the whales. Or the ocean, just by stopping one corrupt guy.

It had a way too simple world view at times.

What I absolutely love is the German dub, because Alfred is dubbed by a Dutch woman. Sounds adorable. Kinda strange though that he always talks like that, from kid to adult. Overall style and SFX are very cute.

Hank (the mole) saw what happened but it's never explain if he tried to do something besides taking care of Alfred which is weird because the series always paints him like a man that stands against any kind of injustice and was friends with he father. I mean, the capitalist eventually get arrested but for something complete apart of the murder, don't know what the message with that was.

The whale arc is not that bad, yes it doesn't really makes sense than in a word where fish can talk like any other person this ones are hunted but then you have gems like the alien episode, but I do agree with you: the Dolf dictatorship is the high point of the series, shame that nothing else gets to top that but then again I read that the creator wrote the overall plot of the 52 episodes while he was driving to a concert so I guess that he was running out of ideas.

I only have hear the original Holland and Spanish dub but for I can tell for what you say, it seems that Alfred always has this child like voice.

There's a difference between showing social issues in a way that makes you think and preaching that someone is bad if they don't think the same as the show's writers.

A good example is Star Trek. ST:TNG and ST:DS9 had all the "six gorillion" sentiments buried in the Bajorans and their oppressors, the Cardassians. It was usually well done and didn't leave me feeling like I'd be harangued by activists. Compare with STD, which just says "You're shit for oppressing everyone, you evil white men! Also, fuck you, our Klingons are baroque and hideous to teach you not to make assumptions about culture or beauty," like we all didn't love the original and second-generation Klingons more than any other race.
