There's nothing wrong with it, but you need to build it up instead of shoving it in out of nowhere just to "appease the masses (California)".
I'd have nothing against it if it wasn't for most of it feeling like it was made just to say: "Look, my characters are gay mixed-race muslim lesbians who are empowered and independent! Nothing like this was done before! Pay attention to me!!!" instead of what was already done and built up with character development in shows like the Legend of Korra, Adventure Time, Phoenix becoming the new Captain America or countless Weaboo Cartoons so far.
It's like the HBO risk-taker of cartoons today. You do it, you're automatically the talk of the news forever… It's like these people think most of America is still homophobic and racist by a majority.
It's like the old saying goes:
"Talent is not a colour nor a gender, it's a skill."
