People don't really want Space Jam 2, they want to FEEL the same way as they did when they REMEMBER watching Space Jam. Take out the memetics and SJ is a terrible movie with unfunny comedy. The only thing that held that feature length Nike commercial was the soundtrack, probably some degenerate also got a kick out of seeing Newman getting inflated - which by the way, to my utter surprise, he's not a Jewish actor, despite looking even more Jewish than the rest of the Seinfeld cast.
Same thing with most nostalgiafagging that we get today. Besides we all know that Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden is the true sequel to Space Jam

I watched it today because I got tickets for buying enough worth of Lego sets.
It's not as memorable as the first one, doesn't have all that creativity. I would say "ignoring the agenda", but you can't ignore it - the whole film is based around it. The initial previews had me hooked with the creative post apocalyptic sets, but that's only a tiny part of the movie.

The one main thing that prevents the lego movie 2 ascending to heights of being a classic like the first, is that while the film tries to create a nuanced situation though what it fails is that Rex is actually philosophically correct about the fundamental tragedies of life ,and slips up in that Emmet doesn't symbolically defeat and integrate Rex, Much like how in Fight Club Jack the Narrator kills and in integrates his Shadow Tyler Durden by conquering himself and becoming greater then the sum of his parts by embodying the virtues of both Master Builder and Master Breaker of worlds to become God.

Wreck it Ralph 2 was a fucking catastrophe, and not just because of pop culture. I think a big part of why the second one is slipping so bad has to be that the spectacle of it has worn off. The first one was interesting because it was unique at the time. The novelty of everything being made of legos and following a toy box logic would have been enough, the story was just icing on the cake that kept it with some buzz.
Now we've had another Lego theater release with the same getup, a slew of Lego TV shows and made for tv movies and now they're literally just treading the same material as the first big hit and really really hoping you are coming to see this for the story. It could be fucking amazing for arguments sake but at this point it just lost its edge and is background noise to people who see this stuff.

Agree with that. Those pop culure jokes fell flat, especially that string of ones with Velma and Harley. Enjoyed half the musical parts. I was somewhat enjoying the film for what it was until the plot twist of toxic masculinity came and I really started to hate the film. This was one of the few films where I'd rather have no central villain and it being a misunderstanding. Making Rex the villain just undermined the whole film for me. I hated a lot of animated sequels that has come out so far: Incredibles 2 and Wreck-It Ralph: Breaks the Internet and this and I think Wreck-It Ralph 2 is overall worse. These animated films may be technically better in the cgi department but the storytelling has suffered dramatically these past few years.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure Lord Business was originally based on Dubya Bush. He has very little screen time in this film and Ferrell quite literally phoned it in, as he's only on screen once in a flashback. Maya Rudolph handled the parent chores this time, which is presumably why the boychild looks 1/4 wop, 1/4 nog, and 1/2 ew-jay.
Took my sullen 15 year old daughter to see it. She was darkly commenting on how thw hobbit-boy was just like her own older brother, not wanting to play with her. I then pointed out she was just like the little sister in the movie, wanting him to only play her way and never wanting to do what he wanted.
She mysteriously stopped talking.

My diagnosis: not enough Batjackhorseman. Will Arnett has one true gift, and that is playing broken, damaged assholes who occasionally do something decent before returning to their feculence. Lego Batman got hardly any decent time on screen.
